Longer isn't necessarily more impressive. In the same way you find marathoners insufferable, I think lots of marathoners find ultrarunners insufferable because the longer the event the less natural talent is needed and the performance becomes about how many hours of training you can squeeze into a week and how much self-imposed pain you can endure.

Source: I know because I'm terrible at running, have no natural talent or speed, think sleep deprivation is dumb, and don't have nearly enough time to train.
