I was assistant manager of a movie theater when I was 19, the exact same thing happened in our theater. Middle of the day, middle of the week, some movie that had all of 4 or 6 people in the theater. It had been raining a lot, there was a leak and it was just slowly soaking all the ceiling tiles. Once the weight got large enough, a whole section came down. One lady got hit by debris bouncing off the chair in front of her. I basically just gave everyone their money back, and a few free ticket coupons and called corporate. The next day that lady and her husband came back and said they had spent the whole night in the hospital, they think she has a concussion and she's lost all sight from her left eye. They basically wanted me to just give them thousands of dollars or something (somehow not understanding this was a chain theater, I'm just a dumb kid who works here, and just generally being super fucking trashy scumbags) and all I could do was give them the corporate number. A couple days after that someone from the local newspaper called and said they heard about what happened, and could we comment. I told them no, I wasn't allowed to talk about it, and they would have to call the corporate offices.
The next day there is a big article in the newspaper talking about how the theater is falling down from neglect, the ceiling is collapsing in on people and sending them to the hospital. Then it says "We reached out to MYNAME, who was in charge at the time of these events, and he refused to answer any of our questions or even explain what had happened that day." So then I had basically anyone who knew me calling me up to ask what was going on, plus the theater phone was just ringing non stop. A day or two after that I get a call from my landlord saying that he read about me in the paper, and if that's how I am taking care of the theater, he can't trust me in his house and he wants me out by the end of the month. I basically had to beg him to please come over and talk to me in person and see how well I was taking care of his house. He ended up not kicking me out thankfully, but it still sucked.
Just crazy how some random little thing you have nothing to do with can spiral and reek havoc on your life.
