Much sympathy for those guys in there. Being in a submarine on the surface sucks ass. Your inner ear tells you you're bobbing/moving, but your eyes have no frame of reference of motion from inside the sub (no windows), and your brain REALLY doesnt like that at all.

Remembering my counterparts on the Blue crew of my old boomer that were just pulling into port on the morning of 9/11 after finishing their 3 month patrol, seeing their families on the pier waiting for them, only to have to turn the sub around right in front of all of us and head back out to sea for a few more weeks.

Also, had an enlisted guy in my division (nuc machinery division when I was the div-O ) whose dad was a NY firefighter who died on 9/11. He ended up getting a sizeable chunk of change from somewhere because of it, and bought himself a trans am, and got a huge elaborate "sticker" for the rear window honoring his dad.
