I'd say in general you're right - if you're getting any kind of pie anywhere it's probably in the bottom tier. You're only going to get top tier if you either make it yourself or encounter a unicorn. That being said, I think the floor for bad pumpkin pie is much lower than say a cherry or apple pie. I can still enjoy a low quality apple or cherry pie, while low quality pumpkin is completely inedible.I mean isnt that basically what we're all getting at, here? Each one has its own niche. But it seems like every time Ive seen a Pie at a "gathering" of some type. Its some store bought bullshit or some premade filler for a pie bullshit.
Theres a store out in the country side in Pittsylvania County Virginia. The front part is like a knock off Sheetz or WaWa if you're familiar with those convenience stores. But the owner has made the entire back half of the store a Steak House and even though its basically in the middle of nowhere for that county - it brings in basically the entire local population to eat. Relatively fresh seafood, locally sourced beef for the steaks and hamburgers. Locally sourced Chicken. Locally sourced vegetables etc.
The owner's wife makes home made Apple Pies, Peach Cobbler's, etc. all from authentic / pure ingredients and they are just fucking DELICIOUS. Each big ol' slice is a good 11-12 bucks. At that size, Im guessing each pie is making $55 on the low end, to $72 on the high end. Granted the ingredients probably cost her 30-40 dollars now. I've heard the Cakes are delicious too - but Im just not a big sweets person.
