My mom has a birdfeeder in her yard. I think she'd actually miss the squirrels if they weren't around. I think admonishing the squirrels is an integral part of the whole experience. We also have rabbits that get into her garden stuff too.

It has made me realize why my grandfather and uncle both kept one of these next to the front door.....

Neighbor's dog wiped out half the population when they switched from wood to vinyl fencing and the squirrels were unable to climb back out of their yard. Our pool equipment has a wooden half-wall for mounting boxes so squirrels have always used that as an intermediate hop to get out. Funny to see the younger ones learning to traverse the vinyl for small stretches before bailing, but it also keeps cats out.
