i never played wing commander but i did make boot disks for my friends heres a typically config.sys
device=himem.sys
device=emm386.exe
dos=high,umb
now this would normally not be enough, while emm386 allowed 640-1meg access, a lot of those address blocks were still reserved, so you had to do this
device=em386.exe /i=b000-b7ff
like monochrome monitors had that address reserved, you'd have to know to release it, in order to use (like loadhi mouse.exe, thats where all the tsrs go)
qemm replaced himem.sys and it would do all that for you.
why? b/c himem.sys is microsoft and everything they make is garbage or they steal it from other companies like drivespace vs. doublespace
