you do realize Path of Exile is a prime example of this initiative?

if GGG decided to shutter PoE 1 tomorrow. how much have you spent on it? would you want to keep playing, and NOT be forced to swap over to PoE2?

poe1 requires online services. if GGG shuts it down, its gone.
-this initiative is not demanding an offline mode be created. its saying, options need to be provided. its not demanding HOW the company would need to comply either. maybe handing over the server architecture/code. maybe making an offline mode. maybe patching out 3rd party contacts, maybe altering deals with 3rd parties, etc.

you would want poe1 to got the way of diablo2 and private servers right?

Quite the opposite. Every purchase I have made to GGG for cosmetics has been me deciding to give them money for continuing to make a great game and not shoving monetization in my face. GGG also has a track record of *not* screwing over their customers. If PoE1 went offline forever then I would consider my money well spent and look back on it favorably. Then I would find a new game to play.

I am shocked at how anyone views a digital cosmetic as an asset that has to be retained indefinitely. It seems more like this push is some sort of justification for people wirh poor impulse control/spending habits to feel better about spending too much money on a hobby with nothing to show for it.

I truly hope each of these games with cosmetics just containerizes their character selection screen as some sort of wardrobe program and gives it out as a way to "keep" those digital assets. Enjoy looking at your stuff once every few years.

Could you imagine a company like daybreak being told they have to redesign every game in their porfolio to allow for an offline mode, or just cancel the 50 remaining subs of EU players? Yeah they are going to tell you to get fucked nerds
The proposition does not require you to provide an offline mode. It requires you to release, upon ending the service, the appropriate code and documentation to allow people to run their own servers for the game.

That is even more insane than expecting them to develop an offline mode. Never going to happen.

I have a feeling if this gets passed going forward that no games will ever be sold in the eu. Instead, they will go harder into region locking, and games in the EU will be licensed each year and you will have to pay 60 bucks a year for the license. You will explicitly not own the game, and at most, if they determine to shut down service before your year is up you will get a partial refund for the time you didnt get to play.

EU does a lot of dumb shit but this really takes the cake. Enjoy renting forever

If some bill does pass, it will just make game studios release games as a subscription service. You will only be buying access, nothing more. So that Ubisoft corpo will ultimately be correct. You will never own a game.
