I don't know the specifics of CS2's skin system but I know that high rarity knife skins were absurdly expensive because the only way to get them was to gamble them out of lootboxes. I say were because Valve added a way to trade up 5 of a lower rarity item into a random higher rarity item which immediately crashed the market for the knife skins and it seems multiple people have committed suicide because of the financial losses they suffered over this.

It's honestly hard to comprehend stupidity of people having that much money invested into something that can be devalued instantly with zero warning or recourse.
Have people actually committed suicide or is this a meme?

A chinese student with alleged mental issues took a header off the roof. Losses in tens of thousands USD likely from loans so poor choices were made beyond what to invest in.

I read something that said the CS market had a $7 billion market share and it tanked by $2 billion.

I can't even imagine the retardation needed to think "investing" in something like that completely controlled by one company... based on a video game... is a good idea.

It's all make-believe though. The losses were 2 billion in unrealized gains that would never be realized because they would never find that many people willing to pay ten thousand dollars for a knife skin.

Closest I’ve come to that is selling a DotA 2 skin that was a rare drop from attending The International in Seattle. Pretty sure I sold it that night when we got back to our hotel room.

oh yeah, in my Marketplace history.

Sounds like its time to dust off the sexy wood elf and brush up with the cyber these new age kiddos use.

Are you telling me that people like us who have dedicated 8 hours a day to video games can't make good financial decisions?

Man, the early Internationals at Benaroya or whatever were awesome. I remember I got this item live during a match and your name would pop up during the event on the screen there with what you won. Was pretty dope. The event in general was so cozy, since the venue was smaller. Went to one or two at Key Arena I think? Just wasn't quite the same.

Yeah a couple of us all went from the board here to like TI3, 4, and 5? Maybe it was 4, 5, and 6. Can’t remember haha. Key Arena was fun but different. By the time they were having Lindsey Stirling and whatshisass DJ ruin the Aegis raising. Watching EG win live was legit amazing though.

They surprisingly do move. There are a lot of people who invested 100$ and end up having 5,000$ worth of stuff.

The more damning part is the Chinese "investors" have been manipulating the market with pump and dump strategies by buying up cheap skins and stickers that no longer drop, increasing the price.. Then selling it on fomo and making bank because everyone else thinks they can do the same or have something valuable.

Fast forward to the patch you're talking about, there are an interesting amount of accounts who bought tens of thousands of dollars worth in red skins before the patch hit. Those red skins have seen 200% or more value increases. The "gold" became less valuable since they aren't nearly as rare. There is a 7 day trade hold on items recently opened and purchased, and these accounts can were able to trade when the patch happened.

Most people with 401k basically live the trade life. They on average have less than 500hrs into the game itself, and are purely just playing a for profit game.

I'd say most people I've known personally with large amounts invested are into stocks, crypto, tcg, and legos too. Not all of em, but like one or two of the avenues.

I remember I did big batch purchases from the Secret Shop for a bunch of board members a couple times (maybe during the Rerolled era? Fuck, that was a long time ago). I randomly found a guildmate in the line for the shop at TI4(?) and we spent a miserable 7 hours together outside in the line due to various hang ups with the shop PoS system or something. Was good times. Zoid, the guy who did a good chunk of the work into the replay system, would invite some of us over to his condo to stay for the tournament, take us on tours of Valve's offices and would get us VIP passes to the after parties. Someone at Valve was friends with Darude and got him to DJ for one of them, so getting to watch him live was neat. I really miss getting to go to shit like that.
