The problem across all Western media is that women have been inserted into, and then inserted more of themselves into projects they as individuals have zero business being involved in based on their personal tastes.I made the same point comparing D4 art direction vs recent WoW art direction and highlighting the gender differences of who is in charge of each game within the same company. It’s even striking there.
Granted some asshats cannot see that, in general, men and women prefer different styles of games and art direction. Is it absolute? No. I actually think some Disney art is quite good when applied to the right situation. Wow is not that situation. The few serious or semi-casual women gamers I’ve known have been into shit like the Sims, puzzle games, maybe the odd platformer…wow was a pretty decent at men and women enjoying aspects of the same game.
Upshot is that by and large you can tell immediately from art design and game design the amount of women involved.
That is not to say no women share the sort of interests that align with making good video games, but they are vastly over-represented in modern development teams, particularly when you adjust for the types of games women gravitate towards versus the kinds they're working on.
Look at the average game dev teams these days and ask just how many of the extraordinary amount of women really belong in the same building as a game where you shoot people in the face? Odds are, though, that those same types of women are not just working on art assets, but have input on the gameplay, the character designs, the narrative, ect.
It would be like asking how many men design purses.
Who are straight.
Who don't listen to Taylor Swift.
Who can't name every co-host on The View.
You sign up the average guy anyways and I don't know what to tell women other than that purse will have a built-in submachine gun.
