I finally broke down and watched the cutscenes of GoW Ragnarok so that I could see the conclusion of the game. Do you know what is inescapable when you just watch some cutscenes? The modern dialogue from all of the characters outside of Kratos and Freya. It is fucking wild how bad the dialogue is and how pointless and meandering most of the SEVEN HOURS of cutscenes were in the sequel. In fact, in the post final fight scenes you are walking as Kratos and he finishes a story he was telling Atraeus and it feels like it was ripped out of GoW 2018. It made me feel actual rage for how good and sparse the dialogue was in the first one.

there's a trend that "mix tape" drove home, there's a lot of loosers who wanted to be film makers , who are now making video games as a consolation prize. they wish they were making movies, so they're making the least amount of video game in the video game they can so that their story can be put to use and they can feel good about themselves. Basically the same way video game journalists occur.

that's why we have so many wheedonian quips, 4th wall breaks, and non-timeless stories. these loosers were reared on that stuff. they think it's storytelling. they think it sticks it to their political enemies. it's not proffitable but they're the children of rich influential people so they get to shit up the poors for a hobby.

Mixtape was basically a fancy visual novel. I think visual novels as a concept are fine or cinematic storytelling in a game format (FMV style choice games using actual video or rendered stuff), but you need to be honest in your presentation or marketing of what it is.

Mixtape tried to include some video-game like mechanics, but they were just a thin veneer of illusion that had zero impact on anything, the equivalent of giving a toddler an unplugged game pad controller so they think they’re playing the Nintendo when someone else is actually playing instead

i saw a youtuber who basically said mix tape would have been a "telltales: the walking dead" equivalent if there were any choices to make. if anything could change any aspect of it. which is a big difference between your typical story game like that and your modern Game Movie.
