Did you feel that way at launch or did you try to play it years after it and the sequels had come out? I feel like the exploration of the world/story, side quests, and RPG mechanics of ME1 were pretty great.

I thought ME1 was pretty amazing for the times in which it came out, but the gameplay evolutions in ME2, and some of the refinement in ME3 definitely felt better.

I feel like ME3 is the one I differed from crowd-consensus the most. I felt it was amazing. Sure, some corners were cut, but I enjoyed the game immensely.

This is how I feel about the game. Planet scanning and then landing probably seem like a slog now, but my goodness was it light years ahead of anything in the past.

ME1 had Deep mysteries
ME2 was cool but the collectors were no match for Sovereign and Saran.

Admittedly I played it after the trilogy.was already out and I just could not get into it. I beat it but it soured me on the series.

Let's be honest here, ME1 was KOTOR but with a (slightly more militarized) Star Trek wrapper instead of Star Wars. Which meant it was still just Baldur's Gate 1 under the hood.

ME2 was a (then modern) cover shooter with biotic (magic) grenades with some 'exploration' elements awkwardly bolted on.

ME3 was ME2, but with some additional RPG elements attached and (apparently) an 11th hour rewrite of the overall plot.

ME2 is the more streamlined game design, but with very little charm of the unexpected.
