From the page looks like Spokane, WA, go take a road trip then. round trip ticket is 382. 2700 miles will take 38hours by car, 3days by train/trail and 3 transfers, is the 3k necessary so that the award/university makes travel arrangements?

Is the only merit-based basis for the award a 3.5gpa or higher? It was pretty easy to get a 3.5gpa when I was in school, so it doesn't sound like a very special/exclusive thing.

Yeah I paid like a quarter of that when I did FBLA national competitions in high school, and it was a 7 day long vacation AT fucking Disneyland one year, Disney World the next, with 4 days of seminars.

So yeah, definitely a scam, or at the very least a ripoff.

Yeah, it seems kind of odd that you have to pay for it in addition to the airfare and such to be considered an award. Some of the extra cost is so my friend can go babysit the kid while they're over there.

If she doesn't get to go, I guess I've paid for a post divorce bang. Perhaps I could then start contributing to the J49 thread!
