The reason they're looking to go split season has more to do with HBO's lineup of original content getting thin than anything else. Girls is ending, Vinyl hasn't been received as well as they had hoped, and True Detective followed up it's amazing debut by shitting the bed in S2. They don't have another masthead type of series that is positioned to take it's place yet so the suits are pushing them to stretch it out.
