Bronn picked her out. I'd have a hard time believing that Varys planted Bronn. The man has eyes everywhere but come the fuck on. I guess Shae could have seen Bronn with Tyrion and just shook her ass at the right time, seems unlikely though.

The unbelievable thing about all Varys' little birds is that none of them ever give him away. You would think it would be hard to have such a vast network, most probably on the level of imebciles, able to keep their mouth shut about being in cahoots with him. Even if he kills them off as soon as they are of no use, or if they do spill the beans, they at least would have had to spill the beans once to someone.

thats what i mean, if shae was one of vary's plants then wouldnt she be intended for tywin and not tyrion at all? she only went with him because his father made him Hand?

Shae being Varys' minion from the beginning only works if Bronn was also Varys' minion as well, to plant her on Tyrion.

I guess Bronn could have followed Stark or Tyrion to the inn, or been there knowing Tyrion would show, the inn being on the way.

Bronn did leave Tyrion pretty fast when he was promised a Lordship and an estate. Did Cersei give that to him or Tywin? Either way it could have been Varys paying off his debt to him and whispering in their ears to give that to Bronn?

Bronn always made it clear to Tyrion that he had his back as long as he was well paid. He is a true sellsword, and didn't need Tyrion after his Lordship.

I feel like Shae was simply a whore, a true whore out to get paid...not part of the ongoing Varys three dimensional chess game. Tywin shows up and basically becomes king in all but name, why wouldn't she be eager to service him? She was looking to be showered in gold/jewels/silks and shit...and who better than the richest man in the realm?

I think the show had the more touching scene about them going to Braavos that depicted her as actually loving him, but is it not totally obvious that what Tyrion wants more than anything is to be loved by someone who doesn't see a vile, stunted dwarf or whatever? She picked up on it and gave him that fantasy....and he made it rain as agreed.

It definitely was a win for Varys, allowing Cersei to take over earlier than planned and drive the Lannisters off the cliff and all, but I'm not sure he was actually behind Shae or Bronn for that matter.

I agree, for it to be a plot way, way too much had to be put into motion and fall into place just right. I think Shae and Bronn were what they appeared to be.

Of course, in book 14 we'll find out otherwise...

I think Bronn and Shae were what they appeared to be, but I do think Varys did get to Shae at some point after she got to King's Landing. I just don't see Tywin banging Tyrion's whore and letting her dance around naked in his bed wearing his "achievements" around her neck. I think that Varys slipped some Ex-lax type of stuff in Tywin's food to ensure he was on the shitter for a good while, then convinced Shae to be in the right place at the right time (maybe even telling her that by doing so would help Tyrion in some way) and then he put Tyrion in the mix to witness it all and use the convenient crossbow that was lying around.

Of course I could be dead wrong, but thats the great thing about the world Martin created, he keeps us guessing and its fun to do so. I also think its a testament to how bad ass Varys is, that we are always thinking so many people could be one of his birds, or that something that happened was completely orchestrated by his hands. Who needs nuts when you have balls like his.

I'd imagine the majority of them have no idea who they work for. They'd just know that if they sent information to certain places or people, several degrees removed from Varys himself, that they'd receive payment.
