saw this today, 5/10. Its not awful but its not really a comedy, its not a very good action/adventure movie... so what is it? There are 4-5 really good laugh moments but the story drags hard for 40 mins in the middle and a lot of the mexican, drug, and corporate stuff feels extremely inauthentic and "Hollywood". If they had gone goofier it might have been funny, if they had just gone balls to the wall action it might have been fun, but they just play it in the middle and ... meh. Charlize Theron and the lead actor are fantastic, everyone else kinda sucks.
The two most interesting things about the movie are the fact that Amazon Studios is behind it, wonder why they even put it out in theaters, pretty sure its gonna bomb. Second is that this is the first movie I can think of that fulfills that idea of putting minorities in roles that used to go to white guys, the whole "default is white" ceiling that actors have been calling out. The clueless corporate guy who ends up in the middle of a bunch of drug shit in Mexico would have been played by Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Billy Crystal, etc in the 90s and its kinda interesting they drop in a Nigerian immigrant into that role here. Unfortunately it also works hard against the movie since its hard to believe a guy who grew up dirt poor in Nigeria would be so clueless about how the world works.
The story is just a bit of a mess, too many threads that don't really resolve in a good way.
