So are smart TVs basically the only option anymore? We've been using a Sony TV we got probably a dozen or more years ago. Works great, and we use a Roku on it. We've had a few different TVs in the bedrooms though, and they all come with some bullshit interface from Amazon or Google or whoever, that runs like shit, constantly has software updates making it slower, and worst of all comes with ads on it (why the fuck am I paying for a TV that comes with ads?).

We're probably getting to the point soon though where we'll need to replace it. It seems like the only option is a bullshit smart TV that comes with a bunch of crap loaded on it that I don't want. Is this just reality in 2025 and we've got not other choice?

If you're using Roku on all the TVs anyways, I see no reason to not just get a Roku TV. Our 75" in the living room has been perfect and we were already using Roku dongles so it made sense to just go native.

You can get a Roku smart TV. They are basically identical to what you are doing with your Roku, you can pick what is and isn’t on there.

If you are looking for a consumer-class product, basically all are smart these days, yes. Commercial displays typically have longer duty cycles than consumer class TVs, though reviews will probably be harder to come by. Should still be able to hook up a Roku, Apple TV, or whatever if you want "smart" type functionality.

I would get a good device to plug into a TV, like a Shield, Roku, or Apple TV, and not concern myself with the TV's smart functions at all. Even good TVs are built with the cheapest SoC they can get away with to run the OS and it will usually run like shit after a few years of updates. That way you can just get the best hardware for the dollar and never concern yourself about the TV OS.

I use an Apple TV now and never use my LGs built in apps for anything.

I have a curved LG OLED and it's awesome. Would absolutely buy another curved tv, you don't even notice it's curved from the front and the viewing angle is so much better from everywhere else. It seems the curved thing died out though unfortunately.

That seems backwards to me. At a distance it would narrow your viewing angle as the closer side of the tv is now being seen at a larger angle if you are off center. Granted, the far side would be at a better angle, but you would still get a to a bad angle faster with curved. I get curved ultrawide monitors for immersion when you're close to them, but curved monitors/TVs just baffle me. Always seemed like a gimmick to use to increase the price.

It's not though. The slight curve let's you see from the sides far better. The problem with a monitor is you are right up in front of it.

I think this is the only positive review / exp of curved TV I have seen- almost everyone (and the manufacturers...) have gotten to..

Curved TV- too small to be effective "Like a movie screen" to everyone- except the 1/2 people directly centered.

Curved Monitor = good, because its 1 person centered as its use-case unlike TV

edit: to all...just get a LG OLED, they just are the best... even the A or B series... check open box and sales often.

I've had the S90D for awhile now with no issues. If you go through their website usually you can can get an EDU/EPP/Military discount and a +2 year extended warranty if you talk to an agent before buying. I got mine for $1800 after tax + a 3 year warranty that way. The TV is amazing but they haven't quite hit Sony levels of upscaling. If you watch alot of low res content the Bravia will probably be better.

Since Ive been single, Ive went down to the theatre room a handful of times in the last year (probably). I was looking at that same one you listed for the living room, but the only thing Im trying to wrap my head around now is: Will it look fucking silly when my fire place is 73" wide with an 83" TV hanging above it?

Don't worry, it looks silly with any TV hanging over a fireplace, 83" won't make a difference.

Kidding aside and just giving him a hard time, I really do hate that "trend" and whoever established it. Whether it was home builders redesigning living rooms and not leaving room, or whatever. Don't really blame homeowners, I just really dislike it. Had friends and in-laws with TVs mounted 6-7' high above a mantle and expect me to sit on a couch 4' away with my head tilted up watching their stupid TV.

I have made home purchasing decisions specifically based on the lack of options to place a TV besides over the fireplace.

Home builders are literal fucking retards.

The living room has a panoramic view of the lake with the fireplace the only thing that breaks it up, really. I could do a TV stand, but then you would see the back of the TV from the exterior. The room has a depth from TV to couch by .. Im guessing 12 feet or so? TV has always been mounted there as far as Im aware. So I guess it is a home builders "thing" but I have no idea where else you would put a TV in that room. But the viewing quality doesnt seem to be a big deal "to me" anyways.

i walked into one of my neighbors living room, it's a long rectangular living room (my living room would be the same size but the 1/3 is a laundry room, theirs just extends into it and they just have a cubby near the kitchen to house a w/d) and on the far side is the fireplace, but it's offset, and on the long wall, there is the door that leads to the backyard porch and on both sides of the door are even more windows,

and on the opposite short side is a huge window.

ok what about the other wall? well thats where the stairs are at, so like half the wall wall is just banister and the other half is a door (for the closet)

(not the same houses, but you get the idea)

so i just told him, do you even use the fireplace? and he said never once in the 10years he's been there (i had just moved in a year ago) and i said yea me either, why don't you just buy a huge entertainment thing and put it in front of the fireplace, and thats what he did

he put a huge L sectional against the stair wall and it seems to work well. the bad part or funny part is that the 1st floor 1/2 bath is right behind the tv so ppl have to get up, walk in front the tv, go behind to pee, and when youre done and your wearing khakis they'll see you dribbled or didn't shake well.

My mom needs a new TV, hers is ten years old and covered in screen burn-in from static images, captions, etc. Looking to spend $300 max on this because she isn't a TV connoisseur or anything.

The one she has is my old LG OLED, which I frequently refer to as the only brand worth buying, but I recognize I won't be replacing it with another OLED when I'm trying to spend as little as possible.

Which of these two should I get? One's a Roku QLED and one's a "Nanocell" LG LED. No idea how good Roku TVs are and I'm inclined to stick with LG, but I've really liked the QLEDs I've seen in stores. And I have no GD idea what a Nanocell is.

This one is the most comparable to what she has already, it's just the 2024 version of the 2016 model she has now. But like I said, looking to spend $300 max.
