Anyone have any input on IEMS with a mic? Trying to find something to use with my VR headset and I'm just out of my depth on these things. I want quality with a max budget around 200 USD (Unless something is stupid worth it for a bit more).
Saw a random Instagram ad today and remembered this post. No idea wtf these are but apparently it makes you awesome at Call of Duty.

Well, now that I look at the website, maybe he just had an ant lion attached to the ear bud. Oh well, started posting before checking the site.

Not speakers, but...

I went to a headphone meet about 10 years ago. There was about 40 setups or so at the hotel. I heard some guys setup that was about 15k? Mine was about 2k. I was rocking a WA6/HD800 I forget the DAC. Some 20 dollar cables. His setup IMO just sounded...OK. Subjectively speaking I absolutely could not hear what 15k got him vs my 2k setup. The funnier thing was waaaaay more people wanted to hear that WA6 amp and the Sophia tube and their headphones than his setup.

Ya when I had to upgrade speakers I reminded myself that as the prices started to triple and quadruple up the product lines, I had to honestly be able to tell myself, "Does this sound 3x better than the one I just listened to, to justify this sort of price jump ?"
And if I buy this and the wife pokes a hole through it with the end of the mop she swings around like a boom, which countries have non extradition treaties ?

Well, I didn't know that corsair had bought drop.com and completely gutted it. Where does one go these days to look at new and upcoming audio devices?

Pretty shitty they sold out as most good companies/websites just no longer exist due to corporate buyouts.

Well shit, and I never bit the bullet on a set of Sennheiser HD6xx's.

Looking for a headset for work. Not sure what specifically I need but here's the base requirements.
  • Wife takes care of kids at home. So, it has to be at least decent at isolating noise but doesn't need to be active cancellation. Mic needs to pick up my voice and that's it.
  • If headset, needs to be big and high quality. My nogging has cracked 4 headset bands so far. And none of them would comfortably reach both ears, undermining noise reduction.
  • If wired, needs to be a decent length. Lots of headsets have a cord length that's not long enough to run behind and under the desk, letting you hook the slack out of the way. So you have to leave the little bit of slack coiled up on your desk where the hardware dongle is at risk of falling off if you move around a bit.

I use these for work: Plantronics Blackwire C3210 (dual side version is 3325, but I like the single ear better). It's not what I'd call a high quality headset, but for work use, it's surprisingly good and cheap enough ($30ish) to toss or throw in a drawer as a backup if you don't like it. It feels flimsy, but it's flexible and light, and nobody's ever complained about the dogs when they go crazy. No idea how long you need your cable to be, but just get a usb extension. I think I've replaced it once in nearly 10 years of using them and that was only because a dog at the cable. Wife has a dual-ear set, and it's not as light/flexible.

I know it's not scientific but I listened to Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley on my old stack above then the Hifiman EF600 and Fiio K9 ESS Pro. Preferred the new ones and couldn't really tell a difference but for some reason slightly preferred the Hifiman. I said nothing to my wife.

I asked my wife who is not the least bit interested in audio equipment to listen to all three. She preferred the two new ones also. Said in a blind test she wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the new ones but for some reason also slightly preferred the Hifiman. I told her I had the same experience.

She also said she didn't like how everything seemed to be squished together on the low end of the modi Magni 3+ stack. She said it also sounded kind of digital (artificial) at some points. Muddy is what I call it but that has always been my complaint with it.

So take it for what it is, not scientific but I found it interesting she came to the same pick as me. I am sending both back though as I have a JDS Labs Element 4 coming. Since all the quality modern amps seem to sound the same in going for American made, form factor, and PEQ.

No fault to either the EF600 or Fiio K9 ESS Pro. I thought both were great and would probably have been happy with either of them.

What headphones do you use with these DAC amps?

Pretty high sensitivity easy to drive ones. Which may explain the lack of differences. Sennheiser HD 598.
I've never used Sennheiser headphones, but it's definitely something that I want to try. My main driver are the original HiFiMan Aria Organic, and I definitely agree with you regarding the Schitt stack. I have the modius and the lyr 3+. Their dac sounds muddy on my headphones too. Your post about the JDS Labs Element 4 has me interested, though. I'd love to hear your thoughts on in after you receive it.

I bought the sennheiser hd600s last year. I was in the "who can actually tell the difference" camp for audio until i used them.

There is definitely a difference

I'm assuming my new planar's will make a difference here. How ever there definitely was a difference between the two new ones and the old Schiit stuff. Could have just been the noise floor but it was noticable. The Fiio was exceptionally quiet/black background compared to the Schiit. Not that the Schiit sounds terrible or anything but it's just not the best. I'm sure the newer models and higher level stuff is a ton better.

Got my JDS Labs Element 4. Fucking awesome. Dead silent. Feels super well made. Sounds fantastic. The EQ Software is super easy to use. It also fairly small and perfect for a desk.

Looks pretty cool too. The glowing knob makes it look like an artistic representation of a tube.
50 dollar option for the clear epoxy knob. Definitely worth it. They will even engrave the device for you if you want.
