Main issue is this isn't coming out anytime soon. This is a demo for a game that is launching in early access next year. While they might have a short EA, it could very well be a 2027 game so hard to get too interested into it. Looked nice at a quick glance though.

I don't do early access. Have not for years. I'll buy the game when it releases if it's not hot garbage.

My 6 year old insisted i play the cute Medusa. Ran around a little map and remembered how much i had forgotten about how to play homm.

Bought a skill called "art of the deal".

HoMM 3 and for some people s, are one of those games people just will not accept anything else.

there's a ton of HoMM after and 2 and 3. there's a ton of clones, and successors. people just won't touch them, and always go back to HoMM 2 or 3.
Songs of conquest, sirens of the silence, etc...

I've noted it before.. but, for me, HoMM and the clones are games I should like, want to like. but just do not. like most 4x.

Edit. I swapped 2 and 3. I did misspeak. 3 is the more popular one. but 2 also has its fans.

They just added HoMM 2 and 3 to Xbox PC Gamepass too for those of us who still have it.

HoMM 3 (and Heroes Chronicles which are basically expansions for it) is a true classic, I definitely agree with your assessment. Other clones just don’t scratch that itch, hopefully this one will, but not optimistic.

Yeah, HoMM 3 is the high-water mark (5 was solid too) for me too when it comes to these kinds of games. I've always liked the Age of Wonders series as well. It shares some DNA with HoMM, but it's distinct enough to stand on its own.

I really wanted to enjoy Songs of Conquest, but after four separate restarts, I just can't get into it. I'm not sure why, but it feels so dull compared to the spark I remember from HoMM.

I'm cautiously optimistic about Olden Era. It's still a ways off, but the free demo at least gives us a glimpse of the game's foundation and how it might take shape.

Game is good from what I have played. Much closer to 3 and 5, with a few extra bells and whistles. 4,6,7 were abominations.

King's Bounty: The Legend and King's Bounty: Armored Princess GOTY are the closest I've found to that HOMM feel. It sacrifices the base building for a more RPG hybrid campaign. Of course they are pretty old games themselves now too.

Song of Conquest does a decent job at it, but didn't find it nearly as enjoyable as I remember the HOMM games (maybe due to nostalgia).

Hero's Hour was decent too, but due to the auto battler instead of turn based combat, it certainly has different feel.

Cautiously optimistic about Olden Era here. Although I thought this recent bit of publicity meant it was close to full release, not shitty early access. Meh.

Songs of Conquest has it's fun elements, but I also could not put my finger on why I did not enjoy it enough to play over and over. Honestly, the best explanation i did come up with was that it just felt too "cluttered". Not nearly as fun exploring as it is in HOMM 3, thus felt a little rushed, maybe? The lack of good random maps was a big negative for me, too.

I have played thousands of hours of the HOMM series, most of it being on HOMM 3. I started playing since the first one, too. There has never been a game, nor other iterations of HOMM, that held my attention like #3.

I've played the demo of this one a little bit, and it seems like it will be good, but I do miss some of the simplistic features of 3.

Looks like Paul Romero is back composing the music. M&M 6 and HoMM 3 had some great soundtracks.

My dad is playing them demo and liking it. Said it plays and feels like the old ones but they’ve added a bunch of small things to make it interesting and feel fresh.

Played the tutorial and it's like playing a classic game with "modern" graphics while still looking like the classic game.

The animations in the UI etc feels very nice.

Not sure what HOMM I played back in the 90s, probably the first one.

I don't remember if any of the newer versions had this, but I discovered in the demo that you don't have to split a stack if you're trying to leave just 1 monster on a hero. If you pick up the stack and move it, it will automatically leave 1 on the original hero if there are no other monsters in the party.

Not a huge thing, but a nice QoL feature.
