You didn't need that kidney anyways.
Yeah I showed the contractor pics of the 2 story house we sold in SC that we had to replace the roof on for less than the 1 story house we have now. The contractor said flat out they would give the $$ cost back and i was welcome to try and get it done cheaper. Turns out they had to use the only roofer in this 2 bit town that is licensed to do this type of roof. Also didn't help that we picked the highest line shingle GAF made and I insisted on 3 nails per tab, which is supposed to be good for 100+mph wind.

I was juggling at that time 6 million + dollar construction projects in Vegas and didn't need another headache.

The last two times I've changed my HVAC filter it's been pretty dirty. The filter is installed at the unit in my garage. I went to my air return to clean it up and as I was sweeping at it (on the ceiling around 10-12 feet) dust just kept coming out. So, for the first time, I went up there, removed the grill and looked inside. It was extremely dusty in there. I cleaned up the immediate return area and scheduled someone to come clean my ducts but my question to you guys is this. Is there anything special to consider if I want to switch from using a filter at the unit to the return? I know I shouldn't do both at the same time but I'm thinking if I stop using filters at the unit and use them at the return instead, it will still keep the unit clean but also keep my ducts clean. Having the filter at the unit doesn't stop dust from building up in my ducts. Most of my searching just keeps telling me not to use both at the same time. I'm just wanting to make sure there isn't some special consideration to switch from the unit to the return. If not, I'll buy a new grill for the return that can house a filter and just put them there.

I don't know but why not ask the person that comes to clean your ducts?

do you only have 1 big 18in return? usually that can only take 1in filters, vs the 3-4in filters at the furnace

however if you plan to change the return filter regularly (cuz it's more conveinient), i don't see a problem, the only reason the furnace filters are so thick is b/c ppl won't go there for regular maintenance so they have to make them thicker (more surface area) knowing ppl won't go there like you.

I only have one return. My furnace takes one inch filters as well. The return is less accessible because it’s on a ceiling but if it keeps my ducts clean I’d rather change them there.

oh yea my big return is on the ceiling too, but i'd much rather have to pull out a step stool than trot up my attic

i mean you can technically just tape and seal the filter to the outside of your return and see how that goes

Maybe Florida just continues to suck the inflation suck…

Had another company come give me roofing estimates. The first was a fully online company that uses satellite image then chats u up on zoom

This company came out walked roof, looked attic, measured etc.

Metal- 67k
Fiberglass shingle - 35k

Price after their first “given”-type discount - I am sure I could have pushed for more if I was “willing to sign today!” But I was not in the mood.

This stuff is just stupid, fake and gay. It’s a 3k sq ft roof, simple design… (31 squares , if whatever roofing term bs that is)

I just dont get how the pricing works out for roofing. 33 square foot packs for $85 luxury shingles, plus 10%. 3000 sq/ft divided by 33, lets just say 100 packs = $8500.

Lets say its an old roof and need to replace half the plywood. 3000/2 =1500, 4x8 sheet is 32sq/ft. 1500/32=~47++10%, so 52x$22= $1144. This includes the Ridge.

Ice and water shield. Only needs to cover perimeter by two layers. Lets just theorize that that is half of your roof's sq/ft. So 1500/150, 10 rolls, +10%, 11 rolls at $100 = $1100.

Roofing Felt covers the rest, so 1500. One roll is 1000sq/ft. So two rolls at $107 coming in at $214.

Roofing drip edge at $9 per 10. Perimeter we'll exaggerate and say its 1000 feet in length. 100x$9 = $900

Box of roofing Staples per 10k box. $120 bucks. Roofing Nails at two boxes, $55 bucks ($110).

Hell, lets add in brand new tools. Good ol' Milwaukee M18 Cordless at $430 to shoot those staples and nails. Couple roofing shovels at $35/piece. $70 bucks.

Lets add in say $500 for roofing boots, vents, razers, etc. for good measure.

... And theyre charging you 35k? Maybe I just dont know how all this shit works. But making 21,257.60 to pay for labor and profit seems crazy to me. Hell, Ill just pull some shit out of my ass. Labor between 5 people (cause how many can you actually fit on a roof anyways). Split between 4 days (I saw my neighbors roof done in that time) and they were slow as fuck with it... $30/hr between all 5. Thats still only $4800. So still, ~$16,500 remaining? I just dont get it.
