This is why the Thermador in our new house has no ice maker. But that presents new challenges.

We have a spot identified for a built-in ice maker. None of the built-in freestanding ice makers review any better than the refrigerator/freezer counterparts. This KitchenAid is what we have spec'd right now.


Those come with either gravity drains or pump drains and everyone complains about both sides. Gravity is quieter b/c no pump running constantly. Pump is better but the pump fails after 2 weeks and you have to change them all the time so hope you have good service.

I'm at the point of thinking just a countertop ice maker in the pantry would be better, less expensive, less of a hassle, and we'd gain back the under-counter space for another set of drawers or cabinet. Either way I'll die before you take my ice from me.

I had one of those countertop units. It was great but they dont last long. I think I got like 2 summers out of mine before it stropped working. But hey, for $100 it gave us shit ton of ice for 2 summers. If you kept filling it up it would work 24/7 making the stupid little cubes. Enough to even fill up a cooler if we started ahead of time.

$2,500 for that KitchenAid. If we drop it that is $2,500 we can spend elsewhere (or not), but it will require a cabinet change on that wall which means probably more cabinet cost. I already have a drain going there b/c there's a utility sink in that area. Here's the drawing for that coffee bar wall. Just one 16" cabinet or a couple of drawers. Probably less than $2,500 to be sure.

I'm really the only person in the house that likes ice in beverages, the rest of my heathen family just gets cold water from the current refrigerator. We don't even drink sodas or sweet tea or anything that really requires ice. Just me. Maybe the countertop Zojiroushi is the best bet.

Yeah even if it lasts 2-3 summers you just throw it out and get a new one. They are cheap enough. fuck the build in one for $2500. You think they dont have problems with those?

Seems like a lot of kitchen space for just ice if you don't use a ton of it, on top of the $2500.

I do think they have problems with them and said as much about complaints in the first post on this topic.

Yeah, not disagreeing. That's why I enjoy going through things on here with other input. Questions come up fast and then go dormant, then there's 10,000 other things to address, and you just move on with the process. We've got months until cabinet and appliance orders are needed and will have another review. This does seem like something we're better off scrapping though.

If you want that much ice you would be better off just buying bags from the grocery store. A $2,500 ice machine is roughly 830 bags of ice at 5 pounds per bag. No sane person could use that much in a few years.

Think of it this way, for $2500 you can get 25 of those countertop units that last 2-3 yrs. So based on that you have 50+ yrs of countertop units plus saving your under counter space. lol roughly $50 per year to have ice.

i mean if zojirushi has a countertop ice maker, i'm sure that thing would last, at least the thermals would be the best, like i said b4, i have like all the brands of waterbottles and by far zoji is the best at keeping shit hot or cold for days, literally days, i also have this zoji carafe/thermal pitcher when i make tea, after 3 days it's like 140f (i mean you shouldn't drink it after 3 days, i do 2 days max)

I must have misread your post while cooking lunch, thought you said Zoji did have one b/c yeah, I'd buy it in a second.

Now I only owned one of those units like 5+ yrs agoso take this with a grain of salt. They might be better units these days that work better and last longer. But what failed on mine was not the cooling, it was the little mechanical plastic contraption they had in there that would unload the ice cubes. This could be because of limescale in the water? I mean who knows. The thing is it did not fail because it would not cool anymore but the little mechanical contraption they had inside.

No idea how to find them these days, but could keep an eye out for restaurant auctions to find an older "professional" grade chest type ice maker that are made to be worked on (or at least they used to be). Especially if you have a family in sports or that just love their ice. Wouldn't be surprised if there are videos on YouTube and/or people talking on Reddit about repair and various issues for each make/model too.

We have one of those at the office, no not an old on but a newer smaller one, but anyway if I ever need Ice I can just take my cooler, fill it up and GTFO. For a trip or something. But shit, ice is so cheap its not even worth dragging my cooler in there when I can get a 20lb bag of ice for $6 or some shit at the local gas station. Plus its better, filtered ice too.

Skip that $2,500 built in ice maker. Couldn't you add a pull out drawer where the built in was going to go? Would give you some extra cabinet space, plus hide the ice maker.

My LG makes ice balls in the bottom and normal ice up top in the door- its been the best in-door one I or my family has owned - the worst was my brothers Samsung

My LG that I paid $3500 for lasted all of 2 yrs and then the "linear compressor" went to shit. Now they were willing to send me a new one, with one caveat, I had to find and pay for the installation, which cost about a grand.

Dont ever buy an LG anything that is not a TV or a monitor. There is still a class action lawsuit pending for these compressors, and best of alll they still use them in their fridges, lol. It was literally throwing $3500 to garbage.
