I got a philips OLED 803 or something many years ago and the thing just keeps going, not a single issue.

really happy with it, it has ran an absurd amount of hours

So we’re moving. My setup currently uses a set of Harman Kardon. I’m considering going wireless for the bookshelf’s this time. Anyone tried those setups? Most are pretty pricey.

I don't know what you are looking to spend to but these are supposed to be be the bees knees.

I can afford those but didn’t want to. Was looking at some Samsung options. Seemed ok reviews online but I must admit I haven’t ever considered Samsung the audio type company. I do have the access to run wire in one room but we wanted flexibility in arrangement. She’s not a big fan of TV over the mantle until she is. My original plan was to put wall panels in and run behind the wall and into basement ceiling. It had a very clean looking run. Even doing it myself that was going to be a lot of dry wall work.

When I briefly looked at wireless, years ago, they didn't seem worth it.

They are basically overcharging you for including small amps inside the speakers and you need to have access to a power source for each of them, so are dealing with larger wires, just going to an outlet instead of a receiver. Additionally, the small individual speaker amps usually aren't nearly as good as the receiver amp that you have already paid for.

Depending on your house, it's often not that hard to just drop some good speaker wire down the walls, right behind where the speakers are going to sit (making the wire almost invisible).

Edit: Generally, (from researching them in the past) in wall speakers are inferior to speakers you can point for surround, but have some cases where they perform sufficiently, such as Atmos celling speakers and, to an extent, front left/right. MonoPrice had some decent rated house brand speakers for in wall, but not all of them are good, so need to check each model on somewhere like AVSforum.

The back of those rather expensive wireless Sony speakers:

If I end up doing wire, I plan to run under since I have full access under the house. And I agree on in-wall, I’d rather run out good wire to a plate - they have some with banana ports. Then I can swap out my speakers when I want without worry about fit.

The wireless is compelling because our plugins are well laid out. I’m giving it a month at the new house anyway before I start cutting wall. Couple different arrangements. I’ll run some flexible cable track under the rug as we figure it out.

My wife wants me to get headphones instead but you cannot touch the experience of a good surround system.

As far as sound bars go it's one of the better ones. As long as you don't mind soundbar sound it's a good choice. Not sure about the surround speakers there but if they are battery powered they will need frequent charging. So keep that in mind.

We have one of the older Q-series sound bars (can't find it at the moment in my Amazon history, bought it open box for a good discount) and it is totally passable for our living room TV. There are even times where the surround is suddenly amazing and makes me glance to the side like a cat is doing something in the kitchen. But it is very frequency / whatever specific and our living area has an odd shape and isn't very conducive to optimal surround. We don't use surrounds, just the bar and the little sub.

Does anyone have Paradigm speakers? I like that they are made in Canada and not China. The Klipsch Heritage are made in the USA. So I've long been looking at these for my upgrade. I like the Klipsch horn sound but the admittedly not high end Klipsch Reference Premiere speakers I have can be a bit fatiguing for my wife. So considering other options like Paradigm.

My Paradigm powered speakers shit the bed in 10 months, so when I bit the bullet and went to receivers I spent a few hours listening in stores and went with Focal and Dynaudio speakers and have been very happy. The Yamaha R-N1000A network receiver has also performed well for music/computer use, still use an old Denon receiver for 5.1 home theatre, thing won't die.

I was looking at the Founders series for Paradigm. Specifically the 100F or the LCRs. Not sure which set you had.

I've had two Denons die on me In a short time. I might be willing to give Marrantz a try as they are supposed to be better built but never again with Denon.

I've heard Focal are kind of similar to Klipsch in that they are bright. Are they fatiguing at all? I know Focal is a French company but I wonder where they are made.

I'll check out Dynaudio as I don't know much about them.

I'm also looking at Super Lintons, Klipsch Heresy or if I can stretch it some Fortes, and Q Accoustics Concept 50s.

I specifically chose the models because they were not bright, as I previously had Klipsch 5.1's and they hurt my ears. Since every manufacturer has a wide range I copied a few tunes onto USB and had them play them on every speaker in my price range. I was afraid to assume and get another set that's too bright, so I went to a bunch of stores and listened to them all to compare, and never regretted it.

Question for you guys. I have a 2.1 system (Logitech Z625) that has an optical in, but it only runs to the subwoofer, so total layman here, but does that mean only the subwoofer gets the digital sound and then sends analog to the two satellite speakers on the desk?

I do have the capability of hooking it up to a PC that has optical out, so would there be a noticeable difference in sound quality, or is it going to sound the same?

As long as the cables are in good shape I doubt there will be a big sound difference. Plus then you would lose the sub if it wasn't hooked up. That would be terrible.

Cables are all in good shape, this set is only a few years old. The sub will work, as the optical cable goes from the PC to the sub, then there are analog cables that run from the sub to the two other speakers on the desk. Right now it's all running off analog, but I don't know if it would be enough of a difference to make it worthwhile running the fiber from PC to sub, or if I should just leave it as is.

The PC I'd be moving this speaker set over to is for PC games, movies, music. Older games like DoW, DoW Dark Crusade, Doom 3, stuff like that.

Oddly, one of the speakers uses a serial connector, DB9 if I remember correctly and the other is just a straight up audio cable.

In that case I'd hook it up and see what you think. Nothing to lose.

I'll give it a shot. Just wondering if the purely digital signal gets turned back into analog when being fed to the satellite speakers - I'm sure this is beans to audio heads, but it's not exactly intuitive for me.

The optical is actually probably an analog signal since it's audio. But if not your speakers might have a built in DAC since they are powered.

The subwoofer is the DAC and AMP for the system, it and the left/right speakers are getting an analog signal. The "purest" signal you'll get from a PC will be via the USB, as the Optical will be going through Windows and/or whatever soundcard the PC is using. I doubt you'll hear any difference between analog or digital via those 2.1's.
