Mr_Bungle Mr_Bungle have you ever used fish emulsion for an amendment? Looking for more economic amendments other than nitrogen fixing plants. It needs to be something I can use at scale that doesn’t break the bank. Ordered some emulsion to try... Going to make compost tea out of my mexican sunflower and comfrey as well.

I have used it for my house plant collection not full scale production. Fish emulsion is innately expensive unfortunately. I would suggest using this product and it is currently on sale. You could also try using various blood, bone meal powders or seaweed extract from the same brand below.

The Seaweed extract that they make works really well in larger production settings and has a plethora of micro nutrients that you'll need too. I would highly recommend it. I believe this one uses the coveted Ascophyllum Nodosum specifically.

Foler Foler Check this place out if you ever decide to spruce up your food forest or create an edible landscape. I used to frequent here during my teenage years when I lived in CT a decade ago. I have ordered dozens of plants from them and the level of care put into shipping is unmatched. I have only had good experiences over the last 15 years or so. It is the oldest commercial greenhouse in the entire nation with an unrivaled selection. These people are masters of all things plants, both indoors and out.

The edible plants are pricy but you get what you pay for. The majority of them are at minimum aged 2 years, or in some cases grafted to a more established root stock.

Take advantage of the Florida weather for those like me who live in colder areas.

Thanks for the rec. I had already ordered this and it’s too late to cancel? What do you think? Was going to use it as a foliar and soil spray around the fruit trees.

Thanks for the recs. Yeah, my food forest is an edible landscape. I have almost everything in those links. 8 varieties of avos, 9 varieties of mangos, multiple vars of mulberries, persimmons, pineapples, tons of elderberry, lots of different guavas, Barbados cherries, Surinam cherry, bay leaf, allspice, dragon fruit, passionfruit, and the list goes on 😄.

I’m currently limiting myself from buying anymore edible plants/trees until my home nursery is completely unstocked… Getting veryyy close. Have a ton of pineapple, DF, prickly pear, olive tree and other randos I need to plant.

Thankfully where I live there is a great and growing community of edible landscaping nurseries.

I’m in 9b and I couldn’t think of a better place to grow. I’m getting tons of peaches rn thanks to low chill hour grafted varieties, plums and even nectarines! Meanwhile my tropicals are doing great. They take a hit every winter with a cold front but as my food forest grows and more microclimates are created that should improve.

I think that bottle should be just fine! I only rec the other one because I know it has a specific type of seaweed that I can vouch for. As a foliar spray just avoid applying it during peak sunlight hours. And perhaps only spray the leaves of a select few plants within each species as a litmus test. Spraying the underside of the foliage is also a good practice.

Would you do a soil drench instead?

I think its an effective idea and a lot quicker. It will also save you time in the long run because you don't have to apply it as frequently in comparison to a foliar spray. Soil drench has a slower but steady release of nutrients while foliar nutrient application is faster but has a shorter "half life".

I don't know what ratios the bottle suggests but I tend to water mine down just a bit more to save some money.

Give it a try with a small group and just to see the difference and go from there.

What’s the most effective way to drench? Is there like a bottle I can attach to a hose?.. I don’t want to mix this in a bucket and pour it..

I would buy a large reservoir and place a submergible pump with an attached hose and wand. Use a power drill with the paint mixer attachment to mix everything up. A combined PH/EC probe might be a good investment as well.

I used these to power an irrigation system at my job.

edit - I assume your suggesting the trash can act as reservoir?

Deer love to murder trees. They ripped all the branches off of my little apple tree I planted last year. Luckily the cherry tree survived. Probably because it was closer to the house.

For fertilizer make sure you aint buying bagged. Might be a trip, but should have an ag place somewhere that sells various mixes of urea etc to get the values you want. Putting down 1000 lbs on my 5 acres was like $300 odd iirc.

Deer have been getting frisky in my orchard as well. I have a thing with a local hair cut place, and I spread a huge amount of human hair through my whole orchard (like 9 big garbage bags full). It has worked in the past, I hope it does again.

Ok looked everything over. I wonder if they make something or I could make something like a towable reservoir - I could just tow it around with my UTV to each of my agroforestry rows… maybe a good DIY project.. Wonder if I could find a clear reservoir with gallon/liter marks, a small UTV trailer, hose holder and make something.. Any chance you’ve seen a product like this?

Trailer like this

with something like this but need a way to measure liquid volume

And a hose holder attached to it…

Then maybe get a 12v version of that pump and run it off the UTV battery..

This would also make drenching compost tea tenfold more easy. I HATE moving hundreds of foot of hose around my agroforestry rows.

So literally something like this… Seems like they only sell in EU. Also no markers for measurement but I’m sure I could find a hose attachment that measures how many gallons of water have been output by a hose, could use that when filling..

Edit - another potential option..

I'm not really sure. I can say that while camping in a bear zone, like a really heavy bear zone, I spent an afternoon drinking as much water as possible, and then pissing all the way around the camp site. Then hung the food pack high, and made a heavy smoke fire under it to mask the smell. Not sure what did it, but we were bothered by no bears. I do know that some folks get coyote piss in a bottle and they swear they keep the deer out with that.

I just need a piss drip system… run drip lines along my agroforestry rows, connect them to a piss reservoir…

I don't know but I pee in my yard all the time and the deer still come right in. I've heard of people putting up a two-tier electric fence with one low wire and one higher one to keep deer out but I haven't tried it. A guard dog is the best but that's hard in a populated area and sometimes it doesn't work anyway. My mom has an outdoor dog but he sleeps all night and the critters all come in anyway.

One of my proudest moments as a dog owner was one morning when I looked out to see my two border collies escorting a porcupine out of the yard. One was on either side of it just trotting along and the porcupine was hauling ass as much as porcupines can haul ass (they are slow as hell) and the dogs knew not to touch it, just got it out of the yard. My dogs sleep in the house though so stuff still comes in at night.
