We grew up on the Internet, pure and uncut, why not let them? We turned out alrig...oh.

I was a fucking nerd my whole life, and when I was in 8th grade I was into BBSs (Renegade BBS for life). There were handfuls of other ones in my city. One guy who was a fucking creep, he made a fake account on his own BBS and pretended to be a girl and wanted me to snap pictures of my dick and send them to "her" (which had the same address as he did, he was a registered user too on my BBS). The internet is full of perverted predators. My daughter on the internet in a few years terrifies me!

Well I have 2 boys and really never paid it no mind. They both got their gaming computers I built them in the past year or so and they are 16 and 13 now. If I had girls, though, Im sure I would think differently. We definitely had talks about internet safety and porn and all that, like not to snap their dick pics and post them and other stupid shit. I told them they would be held accountable for child porn. We also told them to do a double think about who they are chatting with because it could be some predator or FBI. That pretty much scared them enough. The computers are in their rooms, but we have an open door policy in our house so when I walk by I see WTF they are doing. Mostly its just gaming and shit, im sure the occasional fap or two when were not around, but whatevs. Cant fucking keep them off the shit no matter how hard we try, maybe if we got rid of their phones and got rid of all internet.

trust me get them webroot 3 pcs

i have a continuous 5pc subscription, i control all the licenses (from their master control center, it's actually pretty cool)and i update it every year for my nephews and sisters.

40bucks a year saves me countless hours, even days... one time i had to rebuild my nephews hard drive, every other month some shit would go down, but after i started doing this a few years ago, zero tech support calls, beyond a friend video card.

I get what you're saying, that if they really want to do something they'll find a way. If someone wants to break in to your house, they'll break in. We still put locks on our doors, alarm stickers on windows and things to make it harder though.

Maybe they will get exposed to some shit no matter how hard you try - you still gotta try in the first place. At least you'll limit the exposure. Outright banning or giving your kid a flat no will push them to the friends house for sure. If you control their time online through something like Familyzone or Circle with Disney then they'll have access, but limited. There is less incentive and more effort required to get around your system when they can do most of what they want already on their own device or at home.

They are also more likely to come and talk to you about their access, maybe negotiate and compromise. If I get my chores out of the way tonight can I have more game time Saturday, I'm getting older now can we push the night cutoff back an hour etc.

If they're talking to you maybe you'll have a better idea of what they actually do on their devices. It's not perfect but why not have another tool in your belt. Then they can graduate to normal wifi and have the agent off their phone eventually.

Sounds like some people already have a decent enough relationship with their kids where they can talk to them about anything so it's less of an issue. If that's working, more power to you.

Depends on the age. If they are 6-9, you could probably do it without warning them. After 10, I would make sure they are aware of it.

My best advice is, understand no matter what you do, they WILL find a way around any block you put up. They will. Every "kid friendly" site or game that allows you to play or interact with other users has their share of sexual perverts and edgy wannabes. Every. Single. One. There is nothing you can do about this. Yeah, your programs might buy you some time, but that's it. Once you accept that, you realize that only by having talks with your kids regarding certain subjects, and letting them know you have a safe, judgement-free, open door policy on anything they want to talk about, can you really do the best you can for them. That, and actually log on and visit the sites/games they use - hell play with them. I know a lot of parents will do that. They tend to be the ones who have a more realistic view of what the internet actually is.

And for every 5 guys asking for boob pics, is 1 girl sexually flirting with your son for free shit - game cards, paypal purchases, etc etc. So don't think that's a one-way street.

I use this one for mine Cloud Delivered Enterprise Security by OpenDNS lots of presets to choose from, but the lowest setting is good enough for me. you just replace your router dns with the ones opendns provides and you're good to go. If you want to bypass the filters you just assign your original or other dns ip's to your client. Best of all its all free.

To add on this most routers allow you to force the DNS (ex: my old RT-N66U has DNSFilter under parental options) so the kids can't just go in and replace the DNS on the computer with googles etc..

My kids are clueless as to how computers/networking works no matter how much I try to teach them, so this hasn't been an issue. However I have blocked youtube on occasion but found they were able to circumvent the block from their phones using the youtube app, I guess Google doesn't like parents/IT staff interrupting their harvesting lol

If I remember right I could disable YouTube on my son's tablet, but he just turned 5 so didn't know how to turn it back on.

Crone Crone I suspect you are on the "high" filter, you can knock in down in the settings tab

I remember a long time ago, a client asked me how to filter the kid's internet access. This was like, 12-14 years ago.

I said it wasn't worth it, because one of two things is going to happen, and neither of them are good.

"If they're smart, they're going to find their way around it, which makes blocking it pointless, or they're not going to find their way around it, and it means you have a dumb kid."

Tangentially related question - what computer chairs do you guys have for kids? Trying to keep my 6 year old from developing bad posture habits and my hand me down chair is too big for him.
