Minecraft clone from the Minecraft server devs Hypixel. Comes out tomorrow finally in Early access. The game was initially sold to RIOT but they ended up cancelling the game, and the former owner was able to buy the game back from RIOT. The dev team has said to expect broken stuff. They've been very clear on the state of the game. It does look fun from the video's they have posted.

Forgot this existed. Heard it mentioned a few days ago on a stream, but until this post I had forgotten about the years ago when Riot bought it and what it was.

Apparently they expect 1 MILLION players tomorrow to try and play and they've already made two years of dev cost from pre-purchases as of 12 hours ago. Hopefully this isn't a big bust, but apparently the lead Dev is a really passionate dude and this is his life's work.

For $20 it's probably worth being a little disappointed, but I'd expect giga server trouble for days probably on launch and he said to expect bugs, so if you're cautious just probably wait a few days minimum to see what's shaking. I'm sure plenty of the usual streamers/video-ers will have reviews for people who watch those kind of things about new releases.

Not available on Steam? I highly doubt the 1 million number.
Was drama after announcing it wasn't going to be on steam. Bunch of people claiming it was to avoid bad reviews, dev said steam doesn't currently support all the game's modding features.

I wouldn't let people steam review a game that is in early access, but the caveat to that is some games are in "EARLY ACCESS" for like 8 years, and that's a gimmick.

Most people just WANT PLAY GAME NOW and don't understand ACTUAL early access content is not only incomplete, but usually buggy and constantly hotfixed/patched. This leads to people just neg bombing shit because they bought a 2004 Carolla and expected a 2025 Lexus.

Why not ? They want money, it seems reasonable people would like to know what they are getting for said money.

I could see an argument for wiping early access reviews on official launch, but even then, how is that any different from games that released in a shitty state but fixed everything in a later patch ?

You do have a point that if it cost money they should be able to. Most of the early access stuff that's truly first-launch early access is free, but yeah, I guess I could see being able to review a game that costs money.

That said if they really sold 1 million copies already, allegedly, I think people can get their reviews from people actually playing and not just an easily manipulated steam poll based on the ebb and flow of butthurt Redditors.

Plenty of Early Access titles are well reviewed - if they're actually good. If your product is shit, Steam is going to blow you up and rightly so. I can't really think of a title that has been unfairly reviewed and it's one of the best ways to fuck with companies that FAFO.

Anytime I hear that a company doesn't want to release on Steam, it sends up all kinds of "scam" or "we have no faith in our product" alarm bells. I'm glad Steam gives consumers a way to call companies out on garbage products.

Pretty much exposes their lie, doesn't it? "Well, it's in a release state that we feel we can sell access to it for money, but you leaving a review on it in it's half completed state after you paid money for it? NO WAY JOSE!"

You either charge for it and take the negative press that comes with it, or you finish your fucking game. This is the same shit with MnM.

No it's not. Monsters and Memories is basically a hobbyist/fan project.

The Hypixel dudes are a billion dollar business that serves the largest segment of gaming to ever exist in history (Minecraft).

They operate at a scale and with a fanbase that means they don't need Steam, and even if you wanna claim the mod support thing is just an excuse, it doesn't matter. They will absolutely sell millions and succeed without Steam.

I think everyone here is just out of touch with the scale of what happens over in the Minecraft world. If you combined every concurrent user on Steam they still wouldn't match the daily active players in Minecraft. And Minecraft is super, super old, and needs a sequel badly, which is what this is trying to capture. They have enough clout from a near decade of being the premier Minecraft hosting/modspace to do this easily.

Yeah, it pretty much says the quiet part out loud. "It's ready enough that we're comfortable charging you money for access, but not ready enough for you to publicly say what you think about the thing you just paid for." It's selective accountability. You don't get to have it both ways - either it's a product, in which case reviews are part of the deal, or it's a work-in-progress experiment, in which case you don't sell tickets and act shocked when people judge what they received.

If the concern is "people might misunderstand the state of the game," then don't monetize it yet. If the concern is "people might accurately describe their experience," then that's not a platform problem, that's a product problem.

Pretty easy to do with sponsorships. And also easy to do when most of those streamers are non-English. Especially in a time where there really isn't anything else to play, so streamers will play it for viewership/ad revenue.

Minecraft is closing in on 400 MILLION lifetime sales.

This game is basically Minecraft 2, made by the largest player in the existing Minecraft hosting/custom/mod space and has been floating around in development for like 10 years now.

The available pool of players for this game is in another universe relative to most PC games.

Small sample size for sure, but my sons gaming club at school advertised they would have Hytale available to play today and over 100 people tried to join in on the sign in sheet with only a few days notice. Obviously, they are not equipped for that lol.

I can't say to how many boxes they've sold, obviously, but I can easily believe its at 1 million sales. Reddit is blowing up with it, Twitch is heavy with streamers and so is Kick and TikTok.

I'm about to pick it up now. I'm bummed adventure mode isn't in yet, but I'm fine playing what equates to survival for now.

Looking at the actual game, it looks pretty neat, the first thing I noticed is combat actually doesn't look like the dogshit stuff they have in Minecraft so that's a plus for me. Still no rush to buy though, I'll give it a few years to get more shit to do.

I can't even get a confirmation email from them to sign up for an account. :(

Edit: apparently, I just needed to complain about it here lol

Minecraft really is a big "you don't know about the current gaming sphere" type phenomenon for most people over 40. If you took the "biggest" games most people think of, at their boom peak, the top 4 probably don't beat minecraft on a random Thursday in 2019.
