Are Teslas getting pretty close? I assume the other car companies will just reverse engineer their product and make small adjustments to avoid IP theft once it comes to fruition.

Government will probably stick their fingers in it and force everyone into one system. When that happens they'll probably also make it illegal to drive yourself before long.

It is self driving most of the time

Quite from article:
The original version of this article described Waymo vehicles as "switching control" to remote drivers in unusual situations. Waymo says its remote fleet response agents do not directly operate vehicle controls, but instead provide real-time contextual information that the autonomous system uses while remaining in control of the vehicle.

Classic automation problem:

A system being automated 98% of the time is different from it being automated 99.99% of the time. But a system being automated 100% of the time is an entirely different animal altogehter.

The dream is 100% self reliance, but there isn't a single system on the planet that doesnt require some level of human intervention.

Was mostly joking- but I'm not sure anyone other than Waymo knows how much control actual humans have or how often they exercise it.

Honestly my personal experience with Waymo has been meh. For example, I usually walk the 10 blocks or so from the train station to work when I go in but I wanted to test Waymo out.

Because of programmed restrictions, Waymo won't get closer than 2 blocks from the station, so I had to walk 2 blocks to get in. Again, because of parking restrictions, the closest Waymo could get me to work was almost 3 blocks away- that was the nearest "drop off zone."

So I still had to walk nearly 5 blocks just to get a ride for roughly 5 blocks ...

If I get an Uber it's literally door to door service because Uber drivers just ignore parking restrictions.

On the AI derail, I have a C Suite friend at Chase who was talking about how AI just isn’t panning out in terms of saving the company money. They had a great AI use case they implemented. They spent a year and a half or so and millions of dollars getting it going. Due to laws around the data it’s using and spitting out they ended up having to ADD headcount because the laws require humans to verify what’s going in and out is accurate. They like the data and got what they expected out of it but the project ended up having a negative ROI due to having to add a small team of people to run and monitor it.

If AI can create jobs then I’m all for it!

I view current AI as the 28.8 Kbps era of the internet. It was usable and produced an idea of what is possible but it's still way too early for the technology (internet) to really show itself. It's just a waiting game in my opinion. Eventually we will hit 56Kbps and on and on we go.

Here is an interesting chart:

Very different than dot com bubble. Earnings are still well above price currently.
