Gents, I keep seeing things about these new Trump Accounts, i.e. Custodial IRAs for kids. Is there any reason to do the Trump one over just one at Vanguard? Has anyone else set up an IRA for their kids anyways?

The way I understand it, is basically it’s just an IRA for your kids. Money can’t be withdrawn until they’re 18, but then from 18 until retirement age you still have the withdrawal penalty. The only thing that’s different about it is that if your kid is born between 2025 and 2028. The government will add $1000 as an initial deposit.

For the older kids, the Dells will put in $250 and now Elon is saying he's going to gift a share of SPCX.

You can check if a child qualifies by visiting the Check Eligibility for Michael & Susan Dell’s $250 Trump Account Contribution portal or read more about the program on Yahoo Finance. [1, 2]

Key Details of the Dell Contribution
    • Amount: $250 per eligible child, funded by a total $6.25 billion pledge from Michael and Susan Dell. [1]
    • Target Audience: Initially focused on children born between 2016 and 2024 (roughly ages 2 to 10) who missed out on the federal government's newborn $1,000 seed money. [1]
    • Eligibility & ZIP Codes: The $250 grant is distributed based on U.S. Census Bureau ZIP code data rather than individual family income. Funding started in lower-income ZIP codes and expanded up to a final threshold of ZIP codes with a median family income of $117,300 or less. [1]
    • How It Works: Trump Accounts are tax-deferred savings and investment accounts for U.S. citizens under 18. While the federal government automatically creates and establishes accounts using Social Security data, parents or guardians must claim and manage the account through official channels like the Trump Accounts Official Site. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The only other benefit I can see from it, is you can contribute to basically an IRA for kids without earned income. The money you're putting in is after tax, so when it comes out it wont be taxed, but the gains will be taxed as regular income.

This is the thing that I was wondering about. Maybe I just haven't put the effort in before now, but I was struggling to find a way to get some sort of tax-deferred account growing now for each of my kids way before they hit 18. I just remember that stark comparison of two guys in their 20s where one deposits 10k and the other deposits 1k/year for 10 years and the 10k up front guy's returns just absolutely obliterate the 1k/year one. I want to put 10k in account for them now and get almost another whole decade of compounding.

The only angle I’ve found for is to max it out then can do massive Roth conversions when they’re independent but I haven’t run the numbers too deeply.

Why don’t you do that for me and come back since you are more of an excel and numbers guru in your line of work 😁

Going to take advantage of this dip and just bought a 1 year call on spcx. First time buying long calls but the advantage is it limits how much capital is tied up versus owning the stock. Went with the 100 strike at 80 delta which means the call moves 80 cents for every dollar the stock moves.

actually not a terrible idea. Is your goal to hope and buy the stock at a discount as the year moves along or would you sell the calls at whatever profit you think is good? Basically are you hoping to get in cheap for the long haul if things go well or just a pure profit play?

If it moves quickly enough I'll sell/roll for profit. If not I'll just hold and probably roll if it moves that slowly. If it moves slowly enough I'll even look at selling poor mans covered calls against it. It's an interesting strategy I read about so would like to test the waters. The idea is you sell shorter expiration CC using the long call as the collateral.

I was too nervous about SPCX but I did start a position with NASA etf. It’s down at the moment so /sadpanda but the idea was for it to be a 5-10 year explosion as the space industry takes off(pun intended) and essentially lock in retirement with an above normal gain. Which fits my age and current job retirement goals.

time will tell on this one but it’s like SPY where I don’t juggle the money in that one

SPCX has room to run next year if they hit their starship milestones like catching and reusing, etc. And the continued role out and expansion of starlink and their datacenters to drive short term revenue. All the other space names are years off from anything substantial from what I've read and most are still reliant on SPCX for launch volume.

The problem with SpaceX valuation and thesis is the fact they hitched their xAI to the name. I want to own SpaceX the rocket & telecom company, not the AI business at all.

It muddies the waters considerably, especially when trying to work out Revenues / Margins / CapEx. Like most AI, future earnings predictions and TAM are all pie-in-the-sky wishful thinking. No doubt AI as a technology will change lives, but picking winners is a difficult position to say the very least. Anthropic and OpenAI are trying to convince investors that frontier models will eventually pay for themselves (and the debt incurred for build-outs), but increasingly, the open models are far more compelling use from a cost basis, as well as the security standpoint vs sending your data off site to a frontier cloud model.

You've also got chatter about combining Tesla with the SpaceX / xAI name, which will further complicate things.

Personally, I think my money is better invested elsewhere.
