Also, salary bands may be fixed, but if your thing is important enough, it probably needs a director, right?

He works for Dell, right? Forget it. Large, public corporations don’t hand out raises on a whim, and they absolutely will not give raises over a certain percentage (probably around 10%). I had to leave my company and come back in order to get a significant "raise."
So when i had the good manager, he actually got me a 30% raise randomly. Then in the same year got me promoted which was another 20%. This was roughly 2 years ago. I actually have never had a manager go to bat like that for me.

Yup. Large, public corporations have extremely strict raise guidelines - both timelines and amounts. That was a major reason for leaving Walmart when I did.

"New" operations managers were coming in at a higher starting salary than me. I complained to my Director about it, saying I just expect the same salary as "new" hires, especially since I had been there 3+ years. She was extremely understanding, but basically gave me the "my hands are tied" answer. I ended up putting in my resignation notice in that same meeting with her.

Before I got promoted I actually was the highest paid senior engineer. I landed pretty far past midway into the next band when I got promoted too. Yeah there's a lot of red tape.

Either way I'm going to do some soul searching.

I've been talking to my old coworkers. They hired a pajeet to replace me due to some colonization going on over there. Guy they hired is a complete retard and floundering already. One thing I always appreciated about that company is that the whole headcount is only like 1200 people. You need to deliver and most teams are not big enough to diffuse responsibility. You cannot just shuffle papers around and make excuses while doing nothing. I love the sink or swim environment of startups.

I built their data platform starting from nothing in 2018. Compared to what I saw at CVS and my current company I left it in a good state. A whole head above the chaos that most orgs have. Their new guy cannot make heads or tails of it. Which is not a good sign. Just hearing some feedback from my coworkers the guy is constantly trying to get other people to do the things he is tasked with. Since he has nobody he can "call for help" so to speak. Typical thing though, he was forced through hiring by another streetshitter who is also incompetent.

They are tasked with building out conversational analytics agents. These are neat and can be quite useful but it requires a Semantic Layer which translates which things in the DB are to be used and how when asked about something. As most companies have a great deal of nuance when it comes to revenue analysis, for example. This is something my current org has spent the past year building.

The new guy does not have the slightest idea how to build this and is unable to thrust it on someone else. I think he is boned. He wont be the first guy fired from my old team. During my 8 years there 4 people got fired from my team for not being able to cut it. You needed to be able to independently solve problems with minimal guidance and no handholding. He has a "AI Rulebook" in Excel and that is his starting point. They also want to onboard Informatica for some reason. An old ass tool I have not seen used since like 2017. His current plan is to totally rebuild the solution I had from scratch because he doesn't understand it. This would take years as it took me 5 years of development to get it into that state. So good luck I guess! He also tried to weirdly boast about taking an entry level Machine Learning class when the company is not even running on MLOps at all and the team he is leading wouldn't be doing it if it was.

He also asked my old team to fill out an excel sheet of what to do when an error is received. Like when you get this error, how do you resolve it. Rather than just reading the error and getting to a solution that way like a competent person.

I have no idea how people like this get jobs.

He's got to build a cheatsheet to give the streetshitters he's going to replace them with. Also, God I hated informatica the handful of times I had to use it.
