If Carmack has any genius left to give I'd rather he spend it on the Rift than making another Id game. If he wants to relax and be semi-retired then he's certainly earned it.

Funny that I'm seeing this thread today. I just started reading Masters of Doom and it is a pretty interesting read.

Tellin yah that Rift is the future. Carmack is in the right place imho
They just have to figure out how to keep people in the rift for long periods of time without them getting sick.

I still don't see it.

I am convinced that a good VR headset could provide a great gaming experience, but I am also convinced that it simply cannot be anything else than a niche of the video game market. Why? Because it is too extreme an experience, too removing, making it socially difficult to accept ('my boyfriend was playing Silent Hill VR and when I tapped his shoulder to let him know I was here, he went into cardiac arrest'). Not to mention people don't like 3D because they must wear glasses for it to work, so no matter how super immersive VR is, making them wear headgear is a pipe dream.
