So I bought a kayak off craigslist. I've wanted one for a while, but it was kind of an impulse buy. Here's what I bought it's an 8 foot little guy:http://www.emotionkayaks.com/kayaks/comet8/. I have a couple questions I know most are probably specific to Ohio, but maybe not.

  1. Can I drink and paddle the kayak?
  2. Are life jackets required? If so anyone have any recommendations?
  3. Any other sort of kayak gear I should buy? An anchor?
  4. I want to take it out on lake erie. Anything I should know?

I suggest taking a beginner course on paddling. Proper technique on paddling can really help at not only navigation, but saving you some pain in your arms/shoulders/back from shitty technique.

As for life jackets being 'required', sometimes they are in certain parks, but it's usually up to the paddler. I'm currently using a Stohlquist Rocker. It allows for really easy arm movement and fits well.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would also suggest a drybag and a good-sized water bottle. Camelbaks are nice:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Also, don't die.

I do a lot of canoeing in Ohio -

1 - No. Generally if you pull off no one is going to bother you, but you can get a DUI.
2 - Yes, but they do not have to be worn only easily accessible, wearable, and in good repair. On a kayak this mostly means you're wearing one.
3 - Dry bag
4 - Get it registered. My friend got a misdemeanor canoeing on the Ohio without a registration.

Working through the registration process now, such a pain in the dick. $300 piece of plastic floating in the lake. So stupid.

Ugh. Kayaks are exempt from registration in FL.

Same here as long as you don't motorize it. I have a Hobie Pro Angler with the mirage (pedal) drive. It's more of a cross between a boat and a kayak. I've done a lot of fishing with it since I bought it the first year they came out, in 2009. It's nice to be able to use your hands to fish and not have to paddle with them.
