My oldest is almost 6 and started reading this year at school. She is really enjoying theMagic Tree Houseseries and I want to get her some more "big kid" books that are a similar reading level for her birthday next month. She wants to read Harry Potter but it is a bit too much for her still and I have found a lot of the I Can Read books to be too childish.

I'd love some recommendations for good kids books (more novel type, less picture books) for beginner readers.

I have zero idea how to judge the reading level of books or kids. Saying that, I saved a handful of books from my childhood for my son, because they were just that awesome. Plus I want to show him someone who actually published his first book in 7th grade, and 4 more by the time he graduated highschool - that's fucking awesome. My son is only 7.5 months old so it's going to be awhile... Anyway, Gordon Korman is the author and here's his list of bookshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_KormanThe Bruno and Boots series is what I have (along with a handful of others) that I'll be tossing at him as soon as he's ready.

When I was in the elementary school age range (6-11 or so, back in the 80s), I LOVED "Choose Your Own Adventure" books They were always a great, quick read. You could knock out an entire adventure in one night before bed, but then re-read the same book dozens of times for different storylines.

The best part was, you weren't stuck with just one genre. The themes were anything from sci-fi, to fantasy, to horror, to mystery, to action/adventure, etc.

My daughter is 6 and she's started reading some chapter books. We've gotten a couple of Martha Speaks, which may be a little above her level but she was already at a 1st grade reading level when she was in kindergarten (Kindergarten isn't milk/naps/playtime anymore).

Right now she's reading 'A bad case of stripes', 'Cat in the Hat' and some other smaller chapter books. It really is dependent on the child though. She hasn't read Magic Tree House yet but I did buy those for my son when he was that age. Some links of stuff she has read:
