I haven't watched season 2 yet maybe the son is doing that in season 2, but in season 1 he was very much just a roughneck.
when he struck out on his own, he used the girls death money to buy up dry lands and combine the plots

he was a roughneck for what, all of 1 episode? his story is he did petroleum engineering in college but quit before getting his degree. he worked as a roughneck on a crew to learn how that worked, but shit went tits up in the very first episode and his whole crew died. he spent an episode or 2 out trying to negotiate mineral rights from land owners because he wants to own his own company one day and he was just gathering experience for every aspect of the job before he set out on his own.

And now he's struck paydirt on his very first well, which was already operating, and is now making $10 million a year. Seems legit.
