Saw the first episode and thought it was pretty good.

It takes place across two time periods where the “main focus” appears to be based in 2016 right now while ”current day” is in 2026. Theres also plenty of flashbacks to 86.

The show basically starts with Hal in 86 showing him as this somewhat upbeat, standard, positive superhero that John is watching on TV, idolizing. Fast forward to 2016 and he’s almost broken in his beliefs. He’s clearly jaded, seen some shit, and something happened between 86 and 16 that has him trusting no one. The first episode made it very clear that he’s potentially walking a fine line as a current lantern in that he’s not following several protocols set forth by the guardians anymore (10 years running) and he definitely doesn’t give off pro “team guardians/lanterns“ vibes anymore. He still believes in the lantern credo and so far it appears to be the only thing he still strongly believes in. John by contrast feels similar to 86 Hal in that he wants to do good, follow orders, be that typical hero, and sees the guy he idolized growing up as a dick. The final seconds of the first episode where they flash forward to current day 2026 where John…reunites with Hal…sold me on the next few episodes.

I must have missed the woke stuff in the first episode.

That said while I liked the first episode a lot, this show can take a very sharp turn off a cliff immediately if it’s not careful. The only thing that felt odd to me about the first episode was everything involving the ranch and from the previews they’ve released it appears this ranch and all the players there are going to be a significant part of everything going forward.

I was mostly A kyle fan until the made him OP.

Thought it was decent, Thought they got both characters right, Stewart is always bland as shit, sex scene was to just set up future BS with husband which is dumb. Hal is not only the the OG but they didn't do the Kyle route so he's prolly my favorite comic wise

Not sure what the power lvls are but isn't John the weakest of the humans? That's maybe the best part I liked about him is that they didn't make him crazy powerful

Cautious optimism based on ep 1.

I like this Hal.
"Why don't you wear your suit anymore?"
"You know how when you're young and you want to prove yourself so you show up wearing a tie?
Then you get older and realize ties are a pain in the ass"

John is boring and bland but hes there for contrast.

Honestly not sure what could be considered woke about it, unless people didn't know John was supposed to be black or something.

So don't read comics any more , and when I did it was Xmen. Who is Sinestro and what / who is a manhunter?
Manhunters were the first police force created before the Lanterns, they were robots that eventually determined all creatures with emotions would lead to evil so they started preemptively annihilating the "problem". Sinestro was Hal Jordan's mentor who had other ideas and went yellow lantern (color of fear) as the source of his power.

Might also be relevant to know that victims of the manhunters included a group from sector 666 that would later become red lanterns (color of rage/hatred)

I... think this is fine, so far?

I get why this would trigger people's woke radar - with the exhausted established white man who's about to be shown up by the new minority replacement... if you weren't familiar with the 90s+ lore with Parallax. And boy, is there a lot of yellow in the greens in this show.

(Also, keep in mind John Stewart was introduced in like 1970. This isn't a modern writer replacing the beloved white guy with their preferred minority Mary Sue.)

That said, I do expect to be annoyed by the end of this. I think the question isn't who is THE Manhunter, but who ARE Manhunters*, though I am not sure yet if the _entire_ town are Manhunters or another race, and whether Abin Sur was headed there to seek refuge with or kill them all.

Looks like they are sticking with Stewart not necessarily needing a ring to use the powers.

*Edit: Because not all Manhunters are evil, you speciest.

Is Kyle Chandler just gonna be TV's version of Sean Bean? Gets killed in the first episode of every new show he does.

First episode was good. Always been a big John Stewart fan and thought Aaron Pierre did a good job so far.

I'm so lost, are they changing green lantern shit or am I just not up to date. Creating objects that last and even when knocked out? I also don't remember the rings losing power so easy

Wasn't there a thing where they can lose their power over time and it requires reciting the oath and charging the ring with the lantern to get back to base power?

That's always been the lantern thing but in the show Hal has really limited time on the show for the rings power. I mean they are flying through space ect and it isn't killing the power that quick typically

yeah. ring with insanely short charge time.
5% charge noted. hal only hovers, and John's bird... lasts less then 3hours before giving out.
Hal didn't bring the lantern.. hal didnt use his 5% charge to go GET the lantern in about 3seconds of super sonic flight..
John is somehow maintaining a bird without touching the ring.. and after the ring runs out of charge.. and while unconscious.

Insanely dumb shit. purely writing, "because we need plot to happen", not becuase it makes any sense for it to happen.

I have not watched it ,,,yet. but for the charge lasting time. based on what i vaguely remember, wasn't it supposed to have to be charged once a day? (24hr)?

Old comics had it based on planetary rotation so Earth would be 24 hours, newer ones are consumption based so they can go longer without excess usage. Either way Hal still stopped the alien from bombing the town on a depleted charge so it would make sense to be <10% battery left.

most of my work on Green lanterns was with Jessica. Green lanterns 22-57 2016-2018 but not exclusively. lots of other one shots, annuals, and the like.
does red lantern Supergirl also count? that was supergirl 31-40... although looking back. she ditched the red lantern ring by 33.

actually worked on a few issue of King's omega men as well.
