The wife really wanted to go, and she dug out a bunch of old gift vouchers and cards.
Its been posted so I am not spoiler tagging it.
You can view the giving up of Lilo to the state as many different ways - but it mostly ends up as gaming the system, getting your cake and making the government / tax payers pay for it.
There were essentially 2 (maybe 3/4) things added in addition to slight changes to the overall /flow/
The additions are, well, the crux of complaints and issues with the movie from both sides
Additions
1) Health Insurance Need / Issue / Costs
2) The older sister is suuuppperr smart and is sooooo smart, her doing ANYTHING but "being smart" is a sacrifice TOO great to contemplate!
3) the alien duo turn into / disguise as humans and the science
Changes are here and there, one in general is everything happens /faster/ - so if the original you thought dragged, this one every main hit is cut by about 15-20% in screen time - to get an idea, just watch the pre title intro of his escape. Like the DNA tracking guns, in the cartoon they take his blood, put it in the machine and activate the DNA tracking - in the live action, they just /say/ "they track your DNA" and go.
They cut out most of the Stich and Elvis music stuff
The transformers are upset that the 1 eye alien dude just turns into a male and /for the most part/ wears male clothing (the fishnet attire is a little crossy) - so they are sad he is not cross dressing like in the cartoon, while in the cartoon you 1) excuse it as he has NO idea he is wearing the wrong clothes typical to "male" lol or 2) he is an alien, so he could be a "female" naturally...but whatever its a JOKE in the cartoon - so you know if they kept it as a JOKE the transformers would be upset about that as well.
They cut and are much nicer in passing to tourists lol - in the animation tourists are summed up by the big fat white dude with a bad sun burn that drops his ice cream. They replaced him with a fat native dude that drops his snow cone. Tourists also where kinda but in a bad light of being in the way, and all over the beach etc. They also no longer have life guards at the beach :-(
I do not know if the /Health insurance/ was a tack on - but it kinda feels like it during versions or the writing process.
During the "Older sister needs to find a job and lilo and stich keep messing it up" montage it ends with the boyfriend not boyfriend until post credits guy - "Hey, find work that lets you do what you love to do" trope, and she becomes a surf instructor - this alone would fit the story just fine, allow the big sister to find a fulfilling job and provide for herself and sister - bbuuuuuuttttt /that's not using her super smartness/ - so we have to ignore that "option" and go to the "main issue with this movie" where the sister turns Lilo over to the state so she can get health insurance - live with their neighbor and allows her to go off and become a marine biologist! Again, sacrifice for your family is something that is just not allowed for smart strong females! You must get everything!
This ignores that, if what happened to them with the loss of both parents - that in /most/ cases in America, the younger child would already be in this kind of hybrid foster situation (and that is the case, or why else would there BE a case worker) as they DO try and keep families together, hence the older sister having custody - and in THOSE situations MOST of the time, the adolescent kid is getting benefits inline with "normal" foster situation kids... buuuttt /healthcare is a right and look at the issues its huge costs cause families to break apart/ is a narrative, they plopped that into this story.
