I'm about to get some variety of mini PC to do linux things, since A) I want to put it on my main desk B) I have spare memory and NVME/SSDs but nothing but a 3080 lying around and don't want to build another whole PC at this point because, well, everyone knows, C) this is kind of an uncompleted quest for me, as over the years I have made a number of attempts at this ala raspberry pi et al but never gotten very far, or not far enough. Now with Mint/Arch/SteamOS and Omarchy, the straw/camel's back equation is finally achieved, at potentially the worst possible time. What I really want is one of those Red Beelinks but I really don't want to (not another list) pay $1200-1500 bucks for something that may not get that much use or 700 bucks for one with 24GB of the soldered LPDDR5X.

You could look at one of the minisforum units like the MS- barebones models for example so you can put your own ram (as long as it's SODIMM) and SSD in it.
Laptop hardware so not huge amounts of grunt but they're nice small units at an ok price point and a variety of CPU options. I think you can put a small GPU in it if you want.

As long as you get something like the UM880 Plus, which has the Oculink Port, you could indeed use an external GPU with it.

I installed it on a 2nd pc but haven't had time to dick with it. My one take away is, I'm not a fan of tile based desktop managers.

Moving windows around manually with a mouse or keyboard shortcuts takes tens of seconds per 8 hour work day!
I installed Omarchy (I daily Linux). Started a terminal, it's full screen. Started the file manager, it's a 50/50 screen split like I'd expect. Start a browser, and it splits 50% terminal, 25% file manager, and 25% browser, leaving both the file manager and browser largely useless without repositioning/resizing. So...back to manual management, unless/if preferences can be set.
I didn't get into the AI aspects. While I have my preferences (currently using KDE with Solus Linux), the DE is largely irrelevant beyond learning KB shortcuts or where some GUI setting is, since I spend my time in applications and terminals.

It really is all about memorizing hotkeys. I moved my tater and server to tiling (sway) and I like it when I'm using it, but I don't use them every day, so I forget all the hotkeys.
I usually have to ssh in and try to remember where the config file is before I can even get a terminal open.
I'd like to try tiling on my main machine but I'm still kind of stuck in X land here. I still use barrier to drive my other machines and last time I tried it, waynergy wasn't really ready to serve (the client is fine though).
