There really is a shit ton of content in this game. It can keep you busy for a very long time.

I've been playing my main, level 150 Champion, off and on for a few years now I think. I've lost track of time actually. Might be longer lol. I just recently finished the last expansion, Legacy of Morgoth this past weekend. He's the first character I have finished all expansions on. Now I am going back and trying to 100% deeds in all low end content.

I really love my champion because I just wade in to a sea of mobs and mow them down, but I think my next character I am going to level up is my captain. There's just something about the finesse nature of the captain and how they can play all roles that intrigues me. It's like the jack of all trades that can be either mediocre if you half ass him or really fucking good if you master all the nuances of the class.

Of course, if I want raw damage power, I load up my level ~105 red-spec'd Lore Master. He obliterates everything with lightning and fire. It's pretty damn satisfying after a long day at work dealing with idiots. Just load him up and set every mob I come across on fire.

The champion is the only one I’ve spent any time with. He’s 133 now. It takes me a week to sort out how to play anytime I return. I’ve messed around with the other classes. I keep thinking I’ll eventually pick one up and do another story playthrough someday.

I got a hunter to 62 back when the game was new I think the post Moria expansion had just dropped and I fell off for a long time.
Started a warden and got to like 40 a few years later. Then I made a captain and got to 49 in like 2017 then stopped then came
Back in 2021 and decided to make a new captain with the high Elf race or whatever. Couple hundred hours and I’m just at 72 or so. I want to play a champion or a hunter again but just don’t have the energy to reset and catch up. I’m sure I got alot of free content having purchased and paid monthly prior to going FTP but it truly seems to be the most rewarding FTP mmo I’ve ever seem. Tons of free content and you can deed your way to earn coins to buy quest packs and shit. I’ve never grouped with anyone or talked to anyone since the OG game in like 2010 so it’s like SWTOR an online single player experience for story. There is something amazing about coming across the trolls from the hobbit, or Rivendell, or goblintown for the first time

Great shit

I believe you can play for free up to level 95 now. I'm not sure if that includes all the quest packs, but I know the whole epic story line works up to 95 for free. That will take you through Helms Deep.

  • In the Farmers Faire quest Kick Out the Cave-claws, multiple players will no longer be able to kick the same cave-claw.
  • You will no longer be haunted by Gathering Guests (Weekly) trying to bestow to you when the Midsummer Festival is not in progress. When the Midsummer Festival returns, this quest will be bestowed by Captain Khâtaphos and will no longer bestowed remotely.
  • Ringwraith Event

Kingdoms of Harad

Kingdoms of Harad

Where Sun and Shadows Meet

The Kingdoms of Harad stand at a crossroads, their rivalries sharpening as a greater threat gathers strength. Gandalf has come with a warning of a darkness rising in the South. The Thardúth, ancient servants of Morgoth, rise once more, harnessing powers that could unmake the balance of Middle-earth.

Rally the Kindred of the Coins along with the fierce Mizâdi, Shâra of Renewed Hamât, as rival kingdoms clash and old grudges resurface. From arid wastelands, blighted forests, and perilous ruins, war looms on every horizon. Who will rise to lead the Kingdoms of Harad against the coming darkness, or deeper into it?

Features:
  • Culmination of the SONG OF WAVES AND WIND epic story arc
  • Level cap raised to 160
  • Four new regions
    • Blighted lands of Adagim
    • Arid gourges of Kighan
    • Scourched plateaus of An Sheru
    • Once vibrant lakes of Idagal
  • Over 400 new quests
  • Over 2300 lines of new voice overs (finally someone figured out that a game highly based on story telling should have that story telling voice overed. lol)
  • Camel pet
  • Camel Mount

  • Forge Fragile Alliances: As the Thardúth rise with power from the First Age, the South teeters between unity and ruin. Rally the proud Kindred of the Coins and the fierce Mizâdi, Shâra of Renewed Hamât, even as the ambitious Nakási Wave-reaper moves to tip the balance.

The Bane of Rhûn has arrived on Angmar and Mordor!

The Bane of Rhûn has joined the Black Blade of Lebennin to challenge adventurers on the Legendary Worlds of Angmar and Mordor! Learn more about these worlds on LOTRO.com. Ringwraiths will sometimes appear in-game, either in the landscape or accessible by a portal that appears, and anyone at the level cap of the game world can enter the portal or otherwise take part in the fight. Once enough players arrive through the portal, the Ringwraith will spawn. New versions of these Ringwraith instances will appear as necessary based on the number of players who enter the portal instance space.

Filbert Fig and Adventurer's and Traveller's Steel-bound Lootboxes have been updated!

Filbert Fig has arrived to barter your Figments of Splendour for new and returning rewards! Filbert Fig can be found by the Boar Fountain in Bree along with Galtrev in Dunland, Skarhald in Ered Mithril, Estolad Lan in Imlad Morgul, the Twenty-First Hall in Moria, and in Hultvis in The Vales of Anduin. Read more on LOTRO.com!

News and Notes:

  • This update includes a series of significant changes to frills and bushes to address an issue with game performance. Most frills and bushes are now client-only by default. Some rock and frill placement may be adjusted as a result of these changes, but few visible differences should be noticed. These changes reduce the overall physics complexity of these objects and improve game performance.
  • River hobbits will now grow and shrink properly during the Mushroom Hunt.
  • Chests at Lugazag and Tirith Rhaw should now spawn after control shifts from one side to the other after one hour.
  • The Tyrant at the lumber camp is, once again, the required kill to flip the Lumber Camp back to the Free People.
  • The Evergreen Sickle-fly and Russet Corgi cosmetic pets now properly appear in the collections panel and have accompanying text describing how to obtain them.
  • The Ringwraith event space has had an adjustment aimed at improving encounter AI.
  • The Valorous Potion of Morale can now be properly contained in a Healer's Carry-all.
  • The volume of the Hand-knell has been reduced slightly to be more in-line with other musical instruments, and the Ab2 note is now closer in tone to surrounding notes.
  • Guild leaders can once again transfer without selling their Kinship housing. Items in Kinship Housing Escrow will be moved to Personal Housing Escrow, and can be found on any character on the account. These items can also then be transferred with a Shared Items Transfer.
  • The wrapper quests "A Bountiful Harvest" for the Harvestmath Festival can no longer be cancelled to prevent issues with properly receiving the quests every year.

Known Issues:

  • Some animations are not displaying correctly on the new Camel of the Golden Lion and Camel of the Vigilant Sentinel. These animations will be corrected for all races in a future game update.

So the big selling point for the expansion is more voice over lines?

I don't have any issues throwing ~$40 a year at them, but its hard to imagine this bringing in a ton of new players.

(Honestly, I kinda wish they didn't have level cap raises so often, just because eventually replacing my Tier X Traceries with Tier X+1 Traceries to regain the same power level I had last expansion feels very empty the third or fourth time around.)

I don't think the voice over work is supposed to be a big draw to the game. It's just something they added to the feature list this time. Honestly I am glad about it, but I hope the majority of the work went in to the content for the expansion itself.

Yeah, LOTRO is kind of an anomaly for MMOs. It's an 18 year old game still driven by the journey, the story, and the world. It doesn't need new mechanics or game systems at its age. A bunch of (hopefully) interesting quest lines and locations along with a modest power increase to ease you out of prior end game is really all this game needs. Easy enough to justify expansion costs when there's no monthly sub required as well.

I know they don't own all the rights to all the history but I wish they would do more like Mordor Besieged. Retell in MMO form some of the significant events in middle earth history. To me that is more interesting than random new areas outside the traditional map. Just don't hire the rings of power writers to do it.

Launcher also says transfer off the now closed 32-bit servers is back again. Good for those drawn back by the free content coupon but missed the prior transfer window.

Looks like they're also offering free 64to64 transfers to the third/newest servers in each region.

Kinda curious on what's in the free content coupon? Went to the "news" section of the LOTRO site and didn't see anything. Did the whole move to a 64 server just in case I play this again someday, so might as well grab some more free content, if it's something big.

It's basically everything except the current level 140-150 quest/raid zones. There's also a sale for two of the not included zones (1 quest and 1 raid) for 99lp each so you can get almost everything super cheap. Not included are Brawler and Mariner classes or other things that came with buying expansions. But from a zone/content perspective it's almost the whole game. It's not too dissimilar to how I understand WoW operates these days where you get all current-1 expansion content, the difference here is no subscription needed.

At a minimum it gets you everything that is covered in the books/movies if you just want to see how that plays out. The new zones/expansions are south and east of familiar LotR locations.

You mean it's just auto included now and you don't need to put in an unlock code to make the quest lines available?
