Marathon - Bungie Extraction Shooter

Never played arc raiders so can’t really compare them, but just put in 3+ hours on Marathon. Solo que normal shells, haven’t tried rook yet. Only ever saw 2 runners in all my matches. One ignored me (my first match after tutorial so I was too scared to try and shoot him), the other killed me before I even saw him. TTK is incredibly low against runners. I like the look and feel since I’ve enjoyed Destiny off and on for 10 years. Sound is really well done too. I have no idea what I’m doing, but have enjoyed looting random stuff that I have no idea what it does. Feels like my backpack gets full almost instantly so I’ve never gotten even close to the timer running out, even when I also complete basic contracts. World feels very…empty? I only ever kill a handful of bots and I hear runners shooting off in the distance, I assume that’s what that is, but I never see them other than the 2x mentioned above. Not sure if I’d end up loving Arc Raiders or not since the draw of Marathon so far has been the familiarity of gunplay with Destiny. Going to keep trying the server slam to see if it starts clicking or if I just get bored and quit. Is AR head and shoulders above this? I’ve never really seen the appeal of PvP extraction shooters, but now I’ve tried one a bit and it’s not so bad yet

They aren’t runners shooting in the distance. These idiots literally put ambient gun shots in and you have no way to know who is battling or what’s ambient.
Seriously? How stupid. The sound is so good, but if I can’t pinpoint real players what’s the point?
edit: and is it just me or is the ammo economy wack? Maybe I’m just used to Destiny but I feel like I run out of ammo so fast even when I only kill a handful of bots. My backpack is already too small so brining all my vault reserve ammo doesn’t really seem to help much

Would love to see some proof of this because I've been playing most of the afternoon and haven't experienced it. Most likely you saw a clip where someone didn't notice a turret. They are placed out in the open areas and shoot people passing through regions.

Do shells ever level up and get better/new abilities or increased stats? I’ve yet to find any shells specific loot, but I’d assume that’s how your character evolves and until then you can play any shell that fits your playstyle interchangeably?

You get permanent stat upgrades by purchasing unlocks at different factions once you rank them up. Yes, shells have specific loot (cores) that change aspects of their gameplay. Probably only found in higher level maps / key card rooms.

Tried it. Once you are actually doing something, it feels like the gunplay I've come to expect from a Bungie product. But there's way to many things to fucking hate and bitch about in it's current iteration. I won't be buying this.

I'd say its pretty mid. It's fun if you like the game and want a sorta competitiveness to your gameplay.. it'll definitely pull those types of players away from Arc Raiders and maybe a little bit from Tarkov.. They don't really do a whole lot that is revolutionary to the genre, just filling in a hole that doesn't exist.. There are some interesting QoL's but nothing that serves the genre, only to itself.. while I haven't seen it yet, it doesn't seem to suffer the getting killed by a guy who sat in a corner for 75% of the raid that plagues Tarkov and Arc Raiders; possibly due to the sorta one mission only, it doesn't really benefit you to loot a whole map for the best things.. and while too soon to tell, I don't feel like i've been extract camped; definitely fought at extracts, but it felt a little more natural than setup. I'm sure you'll see the shrouds and peanuts go to this, and the stankrats and exfilcamper stay on Arc/Tarkov.
I think it was MarkStrom or something, idr.. but basically it doesn't rely on rng calculations around armor pen.. no ricochet chances.. ontop of no camming corners.. It's just a flat shooter with interesting builds and characters that adjust your gameplay.
My only problem is running with randoms feels so much worse when pitched against a threestack. I'm sure anyone and everyone has had that experience via any competitive shooter, but if you consider Halo or anything with a slightly longer TTK and/or 1taps, team shooting trumps your ability to 1v3.

I wish the same for Arc Raiders at this point too, but this game is just plain bad.
