Anyone play this game?

I have been playing it off and on for a year or so. Pretty good phone game, not too bad with the P2W bullshit plaguing phone games these days.

yeah been playing over a year myself as well. I played pretty competitive, then drop to super casual, then back to competitive, back to casual. I love the game, but the bullshit cascades that happen in favor of the AI get annoying sometimes. Probably the only game on my phone i've had/played more than a year ever. I agree, it's not too bad with the pay to win scheme. i haven't really paid much at all and do pretty well. I think i've gotten 5 lvl 166 (psylocke/m storm/spidey/falcon/punisher) and quite a few missing 1-2 covers to max. I play super casual now a days since works wifi won't load up the game and I don't get cell reception in the basement to play during downtime. I usually try and cheese the pvp timers and jump in like an hour before end time and snag a cover and usually able to hit the pve points max rewards. I'm in a junk alliance that is like top 1000 at best lol, but i hardly contribute much anyway so i enjoy the free standard tokens and little iso rewards.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun game. Don't take it too serious and enjoy the slow grind to get covers, else you'll never keep up with the Jones' without breaking your wallet in the process.

When I first started I accidentally spent coins on training a skill level for Iron Man by accident. That fucking sucked and set me back. Don't do that.

Space is fucking retardedly limited. Early on you get so many more cards than you can hold on to unless you IAP.

Nick Fury was my biggest pull so far. But he's boring as fuck with just the one skill that makes a protect tile.

Thats the only thing you spend coins on is adding room for more covers. Especially now when they released like 15 new 3 star heroes in the last 6 months. Dont ever spend coins on covers. Collect them from doing events. Yeah it takes a while to amass all you covers but they do come.

I did spend about $100 on this game in the last year, $20 here, $20 there and so on, but its not necessary. The coins come and so do the covers and ISO to level them up. Just think of this game as a long slow journey instead of a short sprint. Also dont try to compete with the whales.

Also this game is on steam as well, but it plays well on the phone. I just take it into the john with me, whip out a couple of matches here and there. Break at work, etc.

I will post a few useful links here in the OP when I get home, no access at work.

What's the general progress path for the game ? i'm doing some stuff on the second campaign, but PvP means all my heroes get too low after a single match and that makes it impossible to progress without burning through heals. My best so far is lvl 15 iron man, not looking to spend any money on this so far.

I found this in one of the FB groups i belong to. Has some good info
Firstly, do not, NEVER, waste your ISO on tokens, the 500 standard. Not worth at all, as it brings a ton of 1*s and you will not stay on that level for too long. 2*s are very common and even the weaker ones will be of much more use. Level your 1*s a bit but just enough to not lose over and over the storyline. Also use all your Hero points (HP) on roster slots, always until you have about 40 slots. Buying covers is not worth because you can't buy enough to make a difference.
When you get some 2*s, before you rush to level them up I want you to consider the strength of it. There are VERY good 2*s (better than 4*s even) and TRASH 2*s, worse than 1*s.
The best 2*s right now (and their best builds) are:
- Ares 445;
- OBW 355 (Original Black Widow);
- Daken 355;
- cStorm 553 or 355 (Classic Storm);
- Mags MN 355 or 454 (Magneto Marvel Now).
Having all of those at lv94 is your first goal, as it helps immensely to move to the next step. Common combos for pvp are Ares+OBW, Ares+Daken, Mags MN+cStorm.
Following there are some other valuable 2*s that can be used as backup if your heroes die or just because you are tired of using the same ones over and over. They are:
- Thor MN 355;
- Wolverine 553 (Astonishing Wolverine, the other versions are not mentioned as Wolverine but as Patch and X-force);
- Hawkeye 355 (the 1* is garbage).
Combos here are using a better 2*, Wolverine+OBW, Thor MN+OBW, Mags MN+Hawkeye, Daken+Wolverine.
Every now and then there's a pvp tournament called 'Ballance of Power' and all heroes are bumped to lv270. Venom and Juggernaut shine because of high hp and damage on BoP but other than that don't keep any other 1* or 2* that were not mentioned above.
And here comes the jump: with those 2*s maxed and after some practice you can start doing around 450 to 500 score on pvp and this might net you a 3* cover. AIM FOR THAT, INDIVIDUAL PVP RANK IN TOP 100. Keep gathering them until you have enough to level a couple 3*s to 120 or so. Yes, you need two at least, and good ones, and here is why:
the level of the enemies on pve is accordingly to the level of your highest level hero. So having just one overleveled hero (and sometimes a bad one) just makes it much more difficult, sometimes even impossible, to make good scores on pve events.
But 'why around lv120' you ask. Because that's when a 3* become stronger than a 2*. Yep, a 2* lv94 is stronger than a 3* or 4* at that same level and a little after.
'Bullshit, no way a 2* is stronger! Why would it be?"
Because after some point the 3* will surpass those 2* by a good margin, and same happens to 4*s. A 3* is stronger than a 4* of same level, but the 4* will go as far as lv270 while the 3* can only be 166. To be honest even the difference between a 3* lv166 and a 4* lv270 is very small (3 points of damage per tile to be exact). The big difference on 4*s is that the level increases their power's damage, so even with close match damage they are a much bigger potential.
Now you have a bunch of 3*s with some covers and either have no space or HP to get more slots? STOP OPENING TOKENS. Tokens do not expire but covers do. Save for later. Even if you could get a 3* or 4* cover from tokens it's unlikely that it would make you start using that hero right now.
Again there are some 3*s that are not worth even keeping, like She-hulk, Ragnarok, MK40 Ironman, Beast and Dr Octopus. Need space? Dump those.
Others are sub par and not worth using much but also not THAT bad to dump. They are:
- Spiderman 355;
- Punisher 355;
- Gamora 355;
- Human Torch 544 or 535;
- Doom 55-;
- Psylocke 535;
- Captain Marvel 355;
- Sentry 535 (nerfed recently but still decent, just different build);
- Mohawk Storm 535;
- Grey Suit Black Widow 535.
They might substitute an unavailable hero or are strong enough when featured on events.
Now to point names, the 3*s that you should aim for are:
- Lazy Cap 355 (Steve Rogers, people call him 'lazy' because he's a copy of the 2* just with higher numbers);
- Hood 355 or 553 (the ultimate support character, you might not level him to 166 to avoid him tanking damage);
- Black Panther 535;
- Hulk 535;
- Magneto 355;
- Lazy Thor 355 or 553 (Modern Thor, depending on whoever you use with him you might want to use the green AP in something else);
- Blade 553 or 355;
- Lazy Daken 553 or 544 (Classic);
- Rocket & Groot 535;
- Colossus 553;
- Mystique 535 or 355;
- Loki 535 (after the rework hes the second best support character);
- Deadpool 553 (try use him once a day, even with 1 cover, on pve if you want. DP points, when used on his purple power, win the fight instantly, always);
- DareDevil 535, 445 or 355 (depending on your playstyle);
- Patch 535 (Wolverine);
- Falcon 553 (third best support character, but only for special tiles team).
Getting two with at least 2 different colors is optimal but for some it might work even so, like Panther and Lazy Cap because cap yellow is way too expensive and Panther blue is hard to keep going. Lazy Cap and Hood also, because cap yellow isn't used and Hood blue is a passive, and so on. Using a 3/3 overlap is way harder because sometimes you can't get enough of said colors and then lose even on pve. Panther and Hood are a good example that works wonderfully when you have enough Ap but are terrible when you have no yellow or black matches.
KEEP ALL 4*s!!! They are too rare to afford dumping, even Invisible Woman can be buffed in future like X-force was.
I might have forgot someone but just point it out and I can edit it in (not counting the bad 2* ones like moonstone of course).
Also when leveling 3*s always level at least two together for same reasons pointed before. And only level them past 140 to put at 166 immediately. Same for 4*s, avoid leveling them too much before you have a wide 3* roster (at least 6 maxed is a good amount).
And as final note, I got some screenshots (from someone else in the game) to show more clearly the damage difference between the 2*, 3* and 4*s. All heroes of same rarity have same numbers of damage on tile match on same level. You will see that at lv110 a 3* has higher damage than a 2* but the amount of covers on that level and the damage difference being less than 5 makes so lv120 is the way to go.
(everything is from guidance of higher tier players, I just put all together. feel free to ask anything and debate about it).

here is another great article written on the MPQ forum. This is the best info you can find imo.
D3Publisher Forums View topic - Polarity's Guide on Going From 1* to 3* (Updated: 1/22/15)
Stage 1: The Newbie (Developing 1* Roster)

Overview:
Get to the last 2 stages of prologue while spending as little iso on your 1*s as possible. I think my main team was all around level 30 and I had completed most of the prologue before I made the next stage, so that is probably a good benchmark to go for. This has recently become a lot harder since the amount of 2* covers given out as PvP rewards has been drastically reduced, so level your 1*s up to max level if it looks like it'll take a very long time to get enough 2* covers. Focus on leveling up your core team such that it is strong enough to complete most levels in the prologue. Also poke around in the current PvP/PvE tournaments that are going on: while you won't get terribly far, they do offer a ton of standard tokens and iso for you to get. If you can, aim for the 300 point progression reward as that will get you a guaranteed 2* cover. Opening any tournament at the very beginning will match you up against seed teams, which your team should be able to easily beat for points. I wouldn't recommend actually joining the tournament and playing your first match until later though, since your bracket will be much tougher as the only people who join right away are hardcore people.

Tips:

ONLY spend HP on roster slots. As you go further into the game, you?re going to be getting new heroes at a rate much faster than you can acquire HP, so do not spend any HP on anything except roster slots. Every character will be useful eventually due to particular PvE/PvP events requiring specific characters, so try to have as much on hand so that you can use them when the need arises.
Feel free to sell off any 1* covers that you haven't put much ISO into (level 10 and under) if you need the roster space. These covers will be plentiful later and tend not to be particularly useful in general. In order, sell Yelena, Venom, Juggernaut, and Hawkeye as needed.
When you're running low on health, use health packs, as they regenerate over time. If you're out of health packs, swapping in your B team (such as Juggernaut for IM35) will let you play longer if needed.
If you run out of roster space, consider saving up your standard/heroic tokens. If you open up a new character with a full roster, you won't have the space to use it, so you can stash them until you have space. If you're cover starved though (in that you have your characters at max level and need more covers), you should probably just bite the bullet and use up the tokens.
Don't complete the missions that give you 2* covers until you already have 3ish of those covers obtained elsewhere. 2* characters with a small amount of covers are just going to be wasted roster space as they'll be vastly inferior to your 1* covers, so you might as well wait until you can actually level up the 2* covers to a reasonable level before winning the guaranteed ones in the prologue to conserve some extra roster space.
Also don't repeat Prologue missions that have 1* covers you do not need (Venom, hawkeye, etc). Later in the game if you want those characters, those missions will be super easy and will be a reliable source for those covers. Same goes for boosts and health packs that you probably don't need at the time: you can save them for when you need them (like a PvP session), and beat the mission then.
If you run out of roster space, sell Yelena, then Venom, then Juggernaut, then Hawkeye. You'll be able to get a ton of standard tokens in the future to rebuild these characters if you want to, so don't worry about having to get back the covers. In general, once you stop using a 1* character, you'll probably stop using them forever. The only time where they are actually useful are during random PvP tournaments where only 1* characters are allowed, but this has only occurred twice in the history of the game, so don't expect them to be useful that frequently.
The Lightning Rounds are the best source of iso in the game: join at the very beginning (opening minutes) of each one, and you'll see weak seed teams that you can easily beat. You get a standard token and a good amount of iso for going up to 100 progression points which you can do off of seed teams, so do as many as you can to farm iso. Your team isn't strong enough to compete in them yet though, so I wouldn't go for much more than that.

Key Characters:

Juggernaut - A very strong tank and PvP character. Unstoppable crash and headbutt are extremely efficient at 5/5 as they only require 2 matches to activate. His main downsides are that he isn't as sustainable as other characters due to headbutt costing hp, and by the time you get enough of his covers, you probably already invested a lot into IM35, who fills the same role as him. However, his red / green only costing 6 AP means that he's a lot faster/scarier than IM35, which actually makes him significantly better at this stage in the game. If you are reading this guide and don't have your IM35 past say level 40, spending iso on leveling juggs will probably give you a much easier time as you transition into 2* land. Another small downside is that you can't use Juggs in prologue nodes involving Juggs, so keep your IM35 for those.

IM35 ? Your first tank and main source of damage at the 1* stage. His red does solid damage for a 1*, his yellow provides nice utility and a secondary source of damage, and his blue will never be used due to how expensive it is, but packs a punch if you can get it off. A solid character for transitioning into bigger and better things.

Ideal Build: 5/5/3 ? Again, you simply won?t have the AP to case blue a significant amount of the time for it to make a difference.

M. Storm ? An amazing board clearing / AP generation character even during the later stages of the game. Her yellow generates TU AP/cascades, her green generates a ton of real AP/cascades, and black is a decent source of incidental damage early on.
Ideal Build ? 5/5/3. While hailstorm is tempting for the damage, I think M. Storm's AP generation/board clear capabilities are more important, so you?ll want to max out yellow/green. 3/5/5 if you're running Juggs since you're never using M. Storm's green over Juggs green.

Modern Black Widow - A fine utility character for stealing AP and chain stunning enemies. Her stun helps greatly in making sure that you can prevent pesky countdown tiles from activating in the Prologue. Note that since none of her abilities deal damage, she doesn't scale well with leveling, so only level her up enough to survive pesky AoE attacks.

Ideal Build - 2/5 - It may seem wrong to purposefully not give a character covers, but Black Widow's purple ability is actually much faster at lower levels. The benefits of stealing black AP (fueling hailstorm which isn't terribly necessary), getting 4 AP per steal (enemy matches only generate 3 AP so 4 AP is harder to get), and purple AP isn't worth the extra AP that the ability costs at higher levels. Keeping it at two allows you to steal the more important colors (Yellow,Blue,Red,Green) for your team and keeps the ability at 12AP, which is 4 purple matches.

Classic Hawkeye - A utility character meant for board clearing/control, but is overshadowed by M. Storm in almost every way.

Ideal Build: 5/5

Character/Team Compositions

Juggs/M.Storm/M. Black Widow ? Probably the best, most cost effective team for this period. Juggs covers red/green with strong, offensive abilities, M. BW gets blue/purple, and C. Storm has yellow/black. Juggs also costs less iso to level since his cap is 40, and M. BW being at 2/5 means a lower level cap as well.

IM35/M.Storm/M. Black Widow ? The cookie cutter team comp for someone who is just starting out. Covers all colors while having strong abilities in all of them. IM35 is the main damage dealer/tank, M. Storm clears the board when needed, and M. Black Widow provides AP stealing / stun support. In this team composition, always keep Iron Man at least 1 level above Storm and at least 7 levels above Black Widow. This will allow him to have higher tile match damage than M. Storm and Widow in the colors they share, and thus allow him to be at the front and tank all of the damage, which means that you can conserve health packs by only healing him.
The article talks you all way the 3* level, but i just copied the first part for info for new players. It's an EXCELLENT guide and well worth reading to get your started and what to expect later down the road.

I've been playing for... 100 days or so now? Running a 166 Patch/Doom is a solid combo though the article states he's a poor character. Having something fill the purple board so that they get zero +dmg gems when Patch pops his green is stellar.

I'm liking the PVP aspect a lot but tiny bit depressing when you hit the 550-600 point range on most and the next people against you are the level 200+ x3 people.

You need to wait it out on those PvP events until the last few hours or so and then hop in, sometimes it does not work but sometimes you can win with less than 300 points. It used to be easier, now its a bit tougher but still doable. Go to D3P forums, they have info on current events and when to get in..etc...

YEah, true. I just wait until there is less than 8 hours left and hope for the best. You just want to enter the last bracket available where there isnt a slew of Lv220 4 star fuckers waiting to one shot you at the end.

Trust me bro, I dont play this hardcore or anything either. Like I said Im in this for the long haul, getting a cover here, getting a cover there, and by the time you know it, you have a nice arsenal of characters yourself. And yeah, you just cannot compete with the whales in this game. Have you ever looked at some of them? They must spend thousands of $$ on this stupid game. I saw a dude today that had nearly all the 4 star dudes all at lv 220, most of the 3 stars maxxed as well. Can you even comprehend the amount of iso it would take to level all those dudes? Let alone buy the covers, because you damn well know he didnt earn 3/4 of those covers from just doing events.

Hopefully they realize this and make PvP more balanced. So youre playing against people your level range.

The Deadpool dailies that they just added in are great too. A free 3 star upgrade if you have the character of the day, along with a good bit of money? Yes please.
