Pretty sure it was basically abandoned, and you MUST play with mods to fix it or itll be a mess. Stuff like certain weapons just dont work and weird ai shit. I think I put more time into 3 than 4, and 3 was pretty flawed...

I think I remember reading negative comments/reviews about this when it came out, so never tried it. After MOO3, anything from a new studio trying to revive this IP was going to be a wait and see.
On the "Endless" games, I've tried a decent number of them and never could get into them either. They always seem like they are missing something and I lose interest quickly. For space games I would rather play Distant Worlds 1 (or 2), Stellaris with mods, or Galactic Civ 3 (keep forgetting to try 4).
For fantasy I would rather play Age of Wonders 1/2/3, Dominions 6, Masters of Magic (recently remastered), or TW: Warhammer.
