The director is the owner of Nike's son. Pretty sure it is just dad funding his kid's passion projects. He also bought him his own animation studio.

It is LAIKA Studios in Oregon. They do make really good claymation movies that no one else would produce if i wasn't funded with Nike money. Then his son went on to direct the live action Bumblebee and now this movie. It really looks like he just does passion projects he wants and is supported by dad.
