Where is there any source that talks about him not wanting to deal with DEI crap? Is that just fanfic? Unless there's actually something out there it seems more likely he wanted to make a super weird ass movie and nobody wanted to lose a ton of money on it. 120 million for essentially an art house film is pretty crazy. The guy hasn't made anything worth watching for nearly 30 years.

Getting funded isn't easy to do. Spielberg himself said he has a hard time scaring up cash.

And yet there are people like Kathleen Kennedy who still has a job after leaving billion dollar holes all over the place.

There is a massive well of money ready to fund the "fixing" of society and eventually usher in the One World Government of Commiefornia.

Good luck getting funded if you have nothing to do with all of that stuff. It's kinda like how Chris Pratt got bashed as a "Trumper" just because he wouldn't join in with the other Marvel stars making political statements. Guy didn't even actually say or do anything political (he's religious, so he probably is a Trump voter). Simply not participating in the groupthink was enough for him to get bashed all over the place. This movie is probably a similar deal, it's gonna have an uphill battle to get any funding/distribution/positive coverage just because it's not part of the hivemind and thus could deviate from the script slightly or say something that isn't supposed to be said or whatever else the case may be. Even if it says nothing. Which is more likely the case. It looks like an oddball film to say the least.

I might have to go see this in the theater. A low RT "critic" score can be a good thing in the current era.

Fanfic.... somehow an 80+ director, that has not made a movie in more than a decade and whose last few films have been mixed bags at best, had trouble to finance an ambitious movie. Shocking! That said, he attracted a bunch of big names for his cast, so it's still a bit surprising that he had to finance it himself.

Some well known names... none that I think are box office draws. A more star studded megaflop like Babylon wasn't so long ago in the Hollywood memory, so I could hardly blame any distributor not wanting to commit $100 million in marketing like he wants, let alone have helped finance it.

Who knows. I looked at his filmography, and you are right. The man hasn't done anything for a long time.
