I think you woukd pay the % of what insurance actually ended up paying the hospital. Most time a health care provider will bill say the 84k, but insurance will only pay 40k. Just like your situation.

I would then hope you would be responsible for 40% of the 40k. Not that that ends up being better than when you were uninsured.
God damn that's fucked. What's the point of insurance if you still go broke? IF i total my car, I don't pay 40 god damn percent on top of the premiums I have already been paying. WTF.

So +nets to numbers is what the council has decided?
Well, we didnt really have a formal meeting.

But as a founding member of the Council of the Shaw, I invoke my one time privilege of the ancient rite of "Do me a solid, shaw bros" and give Magic Numbers positive nets. Like us, he fights against mod oppression every day.

Apparently I already netted him at some point in the distant past. How much reputation has to be spread before being able to re-net someone?

I also netted him. I'm beginning to think he is a machine running a Turing Test. He has evolved quite a bit from his news feed days.;

Well its not like I didn't pull the 40/84k completely out of my ass, so who knows.
Ya but still, even if they negotiated it down to 20k thats still $8k out of pocket, which when you take premiums into account is paying MORE than without insurance. This really is a steaming pile of shit.

Irtysh beagle that's why this shit needs to morph into single payer sooner rather than later. Single payer the gubmint could institute price controls on procedures and shit hold those costs down. Does anyone really think a fucking emergency appendectomy should cost anyone anywhere near 84 fucking grand?

That's an obscenity.

If I had the choice live but pay 84 grand or die, I'd happily choose death. I can get cremated for less than 1000 bucks, fuck it.

Single payer or fucking bust.

Those people aren't paying 0 dollars for the bronze plan, bro.
They are after the tax-subsidy.

And let's just be honest for a second, the bronze plan is a scam. You're paying almost as much for the silver plan
Source?

Mikhail, do you not see the irony that on the one hand you're telling us everyone should sign up for the bronze plan because its cheaper, and then on the other you're claiming that higher out of pocket costs for the bronze plan are acceptable?
I'm claiming that it's better than the politically viable alternative (which is going back to when these people had no health insurance at all which, in the case you're talking about, is the most expensive option of all.

Here's your problem, Mikhail: this situation is called a rock and a hard place. That's what we have. People who fall into this area are stuck between a rock (the Silver plan) and the hard place (taking the bronze plan, paying almost as much out of pocket each month, getting a larger return back at the end of the year, but paying nearly HALF, versus less than 10%, of out of pocket costs if they do get ill.
The rock and hard place metaphor is better applied to people who make too much for medicaid but not enough for the federal subsidies. For your "pitchfork" claims to be anything but laughable, you have to show that that actually represents some significant segment of the population and not really odd cases.

And the fact is that if you roll over your tax credits to pay for the next year, you're technically never getting reimbursed for that first year's coverage.

Its kinda like back in the day when I sold weed. There was a buddy of mine who wanted me to front him a 8th each day, and each day he would pay me back for the previous day's 8th.

He got super mad when I pointed out that technically, the way this worked out was I would be out an 8th permanently, that I never actually got paid back for. The first day's 8th is just a write off, and each day's "payback" on the previous day's 8th was really just paying for today's 8th.

That's basically the situation you have here. The first year you pay in, you're out a cool 8 grand. There's no getting that back. THEN, you get to apply a 7 grand credit towards NEXT year's 8 grand cost. You're still out another grand though.
Except in the meantime you get health insurance (rather than nothing).

I'm still not sure how Mikhail turned our conversation from discussing a simple reality that sucks that will have to be addressed, into some sort of attack on the whole idea of the ACA though.
Yeah how could I possibly confuse your chicken-little unicorn-hugging bullshit for some kind of condemnation of the ACA?

To Araysar: Nope. Mikhail still pretty rustled up from months ago though. Which always makes me glad to see.
Actually, bro, the reason I left was that Beagle had trolled the shit out of me. But he's not retarded so I actually care what he has to say.

Don't let these idiots trick you. It's not 40% across the board. That's the actuarial value which means it's based on guesswork about rates/costs of sickness (and of course not every "bronze" plan is equivalent). My guess is that common stuff will be out of pocket and big expenses will be what's actually covered as a high percentage.
