Had some time throw some paint on this mini I acquired View attachment 499990

If you want to try to make it more ice/gem like, do a bit of reverse value transition with extreme edge highlights, so you do a lot more with the base tone. Very similar to gemstones but with the hard edge it's a bit easier to block in the colors along the shape and do a white edge instead of reflection on the spherical shape.

Those ice crystal lookin pieces only have a Bae coat on them so far. I didn't even get that far yet lol. I'm done with the boney bits though. I'm happy how those look. The sword I literally just wiped a brush off on it so far too lol

Dipping into modelling here but any advice for space marine chapter symbols?

Not sold on transfers but if there's a method to make your own it could work.

Mainly looking for a physical object to interact with the paint.

I found etched brass which is fairly cheap and UK based, but like transfers is only for existing chapters:

I found some kind of plastic with lots of choice of existing and custom chapters, but has very expensive shipping:

I guess I could freehand paint but I'm not confident with that, a stencil seems too unreliable?

So yeah... anyone have any experience with any of these 4 methods and painting under/over them?

Aren’t there some kind of water labels they make you can stick on shoulders and various areas? I’ve seen something like that in the past but never looked into them.

Brass is very finicky and making them attach to compound curves is terrible.

I prefer molded on or resin printed one piece pads. The problem with any printed or cast insignias is they do not work with plastic cement. It's kind of a pain to super glue fine detail into the right place. With regular plastic you can just use Tamiya ultra thin, position first and then wick it around the edges and it won't ruin the surface once you prime it. CA glue isn't that nice.

Transfers are the gold standard "easy and cheap" and look the nicest as "painted" effects, but you will want to get at least micro sol (I don't really use micro set much any more just regular water). There are also a few companies that print transfers well. Be careful about cheap shit on eBay, because most printers can't print white so you get dumb shit like having to trim around a skull on the black line exactly because it's just printed on white stock.

I've ordered from these folks many times

Otherwise hit up shapeways or a buddy and buy packs of full pads.

I think theres a way to print your own waterslides but I doubt they will be of good quality. I know I saw something about that in a Gunpla group.

They are not. You need a sublimation printer to do it well, just order them. Source: repeated attempts with laser and inkjet printables.

Yea I always order some 3rd party Decals when I need something better than what comes with the model. I use Tamiyas Markfit and Markfit Strong for them, but Microsol/set works as well.

Kinda regret I did not order up some cockpit decals for the F14 I am building. I thought the kit came with them but all the video guides and reviews seems to have bought them as extra.

Great guys thanks, will look into custom transfers!

Edit: Seems promising, didn't realise custom transfers were possible. Found a guy on etsy who designs then for you.

Think I'll try brass first just because it's £8 so if it doesn't work it's not a big deal. That means I can paint it and use a different coloured Blood Ravens symbol:

Assuming Blood Ravens are popular enough people make things for them but not too popular that you see them all the time, so it'll be a semi unique symbol.

I keep watering down my initial concept for cost/availability reasons but I guess I'll post about that in the 40k thread.

I suck at freehand but I've had satisfactory results printing onto transfer decal paper designed for use with a laser printer. Then again, I'm easy to please.

Made a mockup of my colour scheme in impcat:

Brutal feedback please, need to get this planned right before I actually attempt to paint it. Tell me it looks like shit.

Don't think I want a full half and half design, so just did the altetnate arm/leg without the body. Helmet will be more coloured depending on rank.

Also want something different enough from other main chapters, so full bright colours like all blue is out too.

I do not like random color limbs and shit. Helmets and shoulderpads different is fine.

Thanks.

I tried all silver other than helm/shoulder/knee and it was too much silver...

How do you feel about the full alternate quarters? Do you just like full solid colour?

You can do something like the boots, gloves, shoulders and helm blue, the rest silver or something. But I agree the one arm and one leg looks weird.

It's a fucking nightmare to paint so that's just a no regardless, but even howling griffons are meh in my opinion.

I should add, markings and stuff like aquila or knee pads are all good places to add some contrast.

Thanks guys, good advice. I agree the one leg does look kinda random now, I'll try again based on your advice.

I like your color scheme and don't hate the colored limbs. Some chapters have odd coloration for specialists and unit types. Like blood angles have blue helmets on assault marines I think.

So you could, for example, give all your assault marines a blue arm. And an offset painted pauldron. And it would make that squad look sharp. Or a tek marine fully quartered, and you only have one or two in the army so it's not a pain.

OK I think this is much better:

Black backpack to match gun and symmetrical splash colour seems to help break up the solid silver.

Thanks again for the advice, keep it coming. Not gonna spam the thread with space marine mockups so won't post another for a while.
