I don't know how to stop eye pokes but I think it's getting to a breaking point. If distancing use closed fist? I don't know how to fix it without changing gloves against and that hurts graplers

Maybe soft goggles that are sealed so they don’t steam up, catch sweat , probably won’t work

Start taking a point away as soon as it happens and it will stop pretty goddamn quick.

But that require relying on refs to be good at their job and most of them are looking up at mediocre.

That was an example of a poke that should get an automatic point taken.

It went beyond rangefinding. He clawed and pressed in.

yeah refs need to be way more liberal with taking points. some bouts people eyepoke, nutshot and cage grab all with no penalty at all. it's retarded.

Timestamped. 5-6 incidents during the fight where Gane reaches with outstretched fingers.

He is a fighter known for low blows already, and apparently pokes are good to go as well. The position of the fingers seems to have intent behind it. During range-finding you see more of a quick soft pawing motion like Jones and Gus were both doing in their fight. Here, Gane seems to be trying to rake/jab the eyes on every exchange. A karate expert and some other striking experts have weighed in that it's an intentional defense move by Gane and not range-finding. His response to pressure (whether to punches, or Aspinall's takedown attempt) is to jab the face with his fingers fully pointed with purpose.

So I have to agree with Chael the last foul on Aspinall should have been a DQ. This wasn't a no-contest situation. These are professionals, and the gouge was intentional.

They should be adopting Pride gloves which minimized the chance of eye pokes.
naw, they should be adopting pride fouls

1 eye gouge = 20% of purse

1 nut kick = 20%

if we go by these rules ciryl already owes aspinal 40%, ha

It will be interesting what the UFC can do to "Take it out of the ref's hands". The UFC is the promotion, not the commission or the governing body. Hopefully they can take scoring points and percentage of purse immediately on foul #1 and escalate from there.

I think eye pokes are the most pussy shit in the sport. At least with nut kicks you have protection and the thighs are a viable target for a fight. Jon Jones made a career of poking his opponent's eyes out and it is despicable.

That's what people assume is going to happen.

Jim Miller advocated for it while demonstrating the current gloves are fine-- the gloves prove every poke should be treated as intentional.

Timestamp demonstration.

Gane should have been DQ'd, and whatever rule changes they are going to make will probably be towards that end.

Automatic point and purse reduction on fouls. Essentially, Pride yellowcard system.

Big John was the only referee that used to give verbal immediate warnings on fingers being outstretched.

I haven't seen a single ref in 10+ years since he retired do anything to prevent a foul. I lost count of how many times Big John said to a fighter during a round to "Close your fingers"

Hell, refs used to warn about inside low kicks during fights. "Watch those kicks".

They call Herzog the best in the business, but I just can't see how that's true. And if that's the best in the business, then UFC does need to do something to take it out of the refs hands.
