Monster Hunter Series

I've been wanting to make a Monster Hunter thread on FOH for over a year, but I figured it would die quickly since the MH series is not well known in the Western world. I figured what better time to post it than on a new forum with tons of other newly starting threads. I'm going to attempt to explain what the Monster Hunter series is and hopefully encourage and excite people to want to support and enjoy this gaming series.

I don't admit to being a great or even a good writer, just a passionate one, especially about this series. If what I'm saying sounds even remotely interesting, but I sound like a moron then please go find more information athttp://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Monster_Hunter_Wiki

What is Monster Hunter?

Monster Hunter is basically what the title says it is. You hunt monsters from small to very large, from air to ground to water, with friends or by yourself. Aside from the tutorial quests and some gathering quests, the game is always about fighting monsters. It is almost constant boss battles.

What could possibly make me want to play Monster Hunter?

-Tons of hours of gameplay involved. Easily 100+ hours for most and for the hardcore you could easily get 200+ hours, if not more.
-Craft tons of weapons and armors, mix and match to make yourself the kind of fighter you want to be.
-Choose from a variety of weapons such as hammers, lances, sword and shield, switch axes, great swords, long swords, bow guns, dual swords, hunting horn(think bard-like), and more!
-Single player and online character are the SAME. You can play with friends, randoms, or single player and use the same armor/weapons/items the whole time if you so wish.
-The series is very technical. It can be hard similar to Dark Souls(which everyone seems to love masochism nowadays). I wouldn't say AS hard, but the game will test you, at least until endgame gear.
-The online community is actually really good. This is no Dota, Halo, LoL, etc type community. The niche crowd that play this game, love this game.
-Available through many consoles. Currently PS2, psp, Vita (psp game), and Wii have available games. MH Tri for the Wii is most recent. MH3 Ultimate comes out in a few months on Wii U and 3DS.
-Some of the games vary, but the majority have online co-op for up to 4 players.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to attempt to link some Monster Hunter videos. I really don't think anyone has made a "Look at me do all this cool shit" type highlight reel. So hopefully this will not be discouraging to anyone since this may be ACTUAL gameplay. One important thing to remember, most of these games aren't in HD except the very latest game which only has been released in Japan so far(coming to the US soon), so some may not look the prettiest unless I find really good MH3U videos.

There are also several Twitch.tv streamers that stream MH Tri or the Japanese version of MH3U.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TL;DR - This is an amazing series, go play it or read the post!

Any comments, questions, thanks can be posted here or PM. If you know the series already and feel I need to add anything important to this post then please let me know!

Tri is the only MH i played so far, really liked it. Overall the series feels poorly handled though; albeit it's huge success in Japan, every game they've released in the last years comes off as a re-re-re-relelease of a previous game, with one new monster added and graphics from 10 years ago.

I'd like to see a new MH game, done on atleast a current gen console, or better yet pc. The later won't ever happen though, which is a shame. Tri felt so much better if you emulated it on the Dolphin; the Wii version had me rubbing my eyes constantly because i thought my vision was blurred.

There is a PC version called Monster Hunter Frontier, but as with a lot of the MH games, it was never ported.

If you're interested in the series, Monster Hunter 4 is trying to be a lot different than previous games, not so much of a re-release like you say. Unfortunately, there is also no date that this would be ported YET. Capcom might be holding out to see how MH3U will do first.

Found a really great video with a mission involving 3 monsters on one hunt.

Well its just 1 month away from Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate being released for Wii U and 3DS. On Feb 21st there will be a downloadable demo for 3DS and Wii U, just in case there are a few of you on the fence.

There will also be some Day 1 quality of life patches.http://mynintendonews.com/2013/02/18...board-support/Voice chat and keyboard support, plus a couple other things.

Instead of me just writing, I'll just post a video with a little more information. The ending is amusing.

I don't have a Wii U yet, but I'll be getting one shortly. So if any of you do decide to play the Wii U version, we should get together and hunt sometime.

Demo is out for download, basically 2 fights of different difficulty where you can choose your weapon.

Lots of new weapons that weren't in the Wii version of MH3 - tried out the Gunlance and and Dual Swords. There's also bow and hunter's horn that seem hard to use while solo.

Tried the 3DS version, I can't believe they think this dogshit camera control on the touchpad is acceptable. I'd rather play the psp version ON a psp. Game specifically says *does not work with circle pad pro when you boot it up as well. So no online MP (only local with a Wii U) and the worst camera controls of all time. Yeah, no thanks. (fully willing to admit I gave up in disgust after 10 minutes, I'm sure I must have missed something but even putting that D pad on the touch screen and pretending its useful is hilarious)

CPP won't work on the demo, but it is supposed to work on the full version of the game.

When are they going to announce the CCP XL for North America then? They announce it for Europe but not NA? Damn Nintendo.

Yeah they really dropped the ball with that shit. Pretty much have to import it for now.

I'd take a guess that if Nintendo was doing the marketing in America for MH3U, we'd have all the cool stuff EU/JP have, unfortunately Capcom is lazy.

I was thinking about the demo and it really is rough for new players. Very little information is provided and it isn't really representative of the real game. It does show what the action is like, but there is a lot more to it than that.

Just a picture to give a comparison on the size of the content in this new Monster Hunter game(MH 3 Ultimate).

MH3U and MHP3 are Japanese release dates. MH Tri and MHFU are US release dates. (Not that it makes a difference, but just so it doesn't confuse anyone. JP gets theirs a year before US)

Every extra large monster means new armor and weapons from each monster.

You could always go back to the old school PS2 and play some.. though it might be hard to bear. Unfortunately, the next MH game is likely to be on 3DS and the US will be lucky to even get it.

Also forgot to add, 10 days until MH3U.

WIIU is an actual console! Sort of =X It is a series that would benefit highly from Xbox's Live architecture or PSN's network setup. WII is just cumbersome and while I'm not 100% familiar with the WIIU, I would imagine it would still be easier to do so on the PSN or Live setups. Poor Capcom =/

Monster Hunter on a next gen Xbox/PS would be a console seller for me.

I got pretty far in Tri, been so long since I played I'm not even sure if I have the same Wii. Post makes me want to play, but I think I'd be starting from scratch.

Also, I miss using dual swords from the PS2 version.

I beat the game, had a full set of Ceadus armor, and still I just can't get excited about a new installation that is the same+. Those "big" mobs are probably just reskinned shit or minor modifications, to inflate the totals. Because while I may shit on many things the Wii does, MHT was -great- for what it was. Had it been on Xbox or PSN, it would have been better. But the installation the MHTri fans had was amazing for what it was. Killing the Rathian/Queen+ mission while still working on gear? Priceless. This new shit feels tacked on. Create an entire new game, tie it into a network setting that isn't retard-standard, and then add monsters monthly for standard DLC fees. Do I have to tell every company how best to do things?
