While Cole was boring as fuck, the actor who plays him was actually really goddamn good in Cobra Kai's final season as the main antagonist, Sensei Wolf. Now I'd like to see him in this movie... provided they let him actually show any of his legit charisma like that show did.
A lot of said charisma might have been due to him playing a heel (and thus null and void for this) though.

I had a buddy who was the first person I knew with a CD changer in his car in the 90's, the literal peak of car audio. And this soundtrack I swear was 2 or 3 of the 10 discs in it listening to how frequently I heard it. It was, as I believe the kids these days would say, a wall to wall banger.

Couple reasons I suspect from a writing perspective
1) An original character allows them more flexibility since they don't have to worry about existing backstory
2) He acts as the "everyman audience stand-in" to introduce the audience to the Mortal Kombat story/lore/rules/etc
They sort of did the same thing in Hellboy 1 with Agent Myers or whatever his name was, then they dumped him in the 2nd movie. Sometimes these types of characters can be the result of producer meddling or they can be "self-inserts", but otherwise it is a pretty common trope in films.

Some lore: Both stunt double and the actor playing Johnny Cage got hurt during the Scorpion fight.
Stuntman broke a rib on the scaffolding fall (still looks like a crazy fall all these years later).
And the actual Johnny Cage actor had a bruised kidney from a botched take with Scorpion where he got slammed into an object.
Same thing happened to Robin Shou in the Reptile fight. Broken ribs from a slam by Reptile on Liu Kang.

Only thing that bothers me is theres only so much you can cover in a movie and apparently they’re introducing the revenants lead by Quan Chi, the rebirth of Bi-Han as Noob, and introducing or touching upon the royal families. Hopefully these things are things they just tease at the very end of the movie so they can focus on what this movie really should be about: the initial tournament against Outworld. The Quan Chi/revenant plot line is something that takes away from the original tournament so even casting Quan Chi makes me think the second movie is going to be a clown fiesta.

Man me and my bros way back when went to go see mk2 in the theater, and some black dude had an absolute meltdown when Cage got got. I think that was more entertaining than the rest of the movie.
