also not new but Jaws 50th is playing in IMAX for a week or two, saw it today. First time I've ever seen the full movie, I think my parents took me when I was like 4 and it traumatized me lol. Enjoyed it, now I get all the Quint references
I thought this article was pretty funny.

A half a century later, Steven Spielberg‘s Jaws still has plenty of bite as the troubled 2025 summer season comes to a close.

The original summer blockbuster, celebrating its 50th anniversary, is opening in second place at the four-day Labor Day box office behind Zach Cregger‘s August sleeper hit Weapons, which remains in first place for the fourth weekend in a row with an estimated four-day gross of $12.4 million and $10.2 million for the three-day weekend proper. The horror pic, yet another win for Warner Bros. and New Line, looks to finish Monday with a global tally of $234.6 million.

Booked in 3,200 cinemas, Jaws is looking at a four-day haul of $9.8 million — rival studios show it coming in north of $10 million — and $8.1 million for the three days. Either way, that’s enough to swim past Darren Aronofsky‘s new movie starring Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz, as well as Searchlight’s The Roses.

The fact that a 50-year movie is doing better than the two studio offerings underscores a rough-and-tumble summer for Hollywood studios and exhibitors, with domestic revenue barely able to match last year’s disappointing $3.67 billion, which was down from 2023’s $4.09 billion. Comscore is estimating that 2025 domestic summer ticket sales will come in 0.2 percent behind 2024, or a difference of $7 million. Heading into summer, most were confident that the season would match 2023’s $4 billion-plus.

They need to get used to offering movies directly on VOD and counting them in their earnings. The theater is going to end up a niche entertainment.

What was the last movie you actually saw in the theater?

I know I have told the story of 1917 and being the only person in the IMAX, but that's literally the last movie I ever saw and I have had no desire to go to actually see something again.

Somebody posted that taking a family of four is close to 50 or 60 bucks, and the prices are just ridiculous at this point, why bother. I guess you can go sit in some vibrating seats because whatever, spend $10 popcorn, a $5 drink, and have to deal with weirdos that decide to sit in front of you.

Unless the dollar cinema from the good old days comes back, fuck theaters.

I saw dune in a theater in France during the height of Covid retardation there. It was packed. Luckily they took the excuse “I’m American” when they asked for my QR code to be let in. Was literally the only place I went in France that actually enforced that stuff.

I was tempted to go into a kino when I saw one in Africa. Figured I’d get stabbed, place looked like some poorly made barn shed, which is actually pretty classy as far as rural Africa gets.

My movie theater is set up in a way where it’s literally impossible for someone to block your view. I’m not against the idea of going, but it’s a super rare occurrence.

What is your fascination with traveling through Africa and other shit hole countries?

Is it because you just know that there are all these different types of animals running around there to indulge your furry bullshit?

As a fellow Texan, don't be like Wheelz and visit India to experience some tigers or elephants, or something gay.

The nicest hotels and the best service I’ve ever gotten were in Africa, and I’m not even shitting you.. It’s hard to explain, but you’re literally a king if you go there to do stuff.

As for France, I often get stuck there because CDG is such a hub, hate that third world shithole.

I'm going tomorrow @5 , will give a review.
Ok so we saw Wizard of Oz yesterday. Total run time of 75 minutes, It's almost all new footage interspersed with original movie footage as well. You can tell where the old footage didn't quite mix in well but it's few and far between. It's a full experience, during the tornado, they blow smoke, wind etc in the theater. There was a forest scene where they blew in rice paper leaves. There was a scene where it snowed and they blew in soap 'snow'. They leaned WAY into the flying monkeys, as in there were really flying monkeys in the theater. It was $258 for 2 seats and I do not feel ripped off. 10/10 would gladly go again as long as I didn't have to pay for it. The sphere is an experience everyone owes themselves to try.

If they will not get freaked out by the flying monkeys (I honestly don't get that part but my 76 year old MIL would not go because the monkeys freaked her out) I don't see why not. The actual experience of the sphere is really intense. It's real loud , like you cannot talk to the person beside you loud, and the seats shake. I mean 8 year old me would have ate that shit right up.
