But how much will be copy/pasted? I kid, but the week after this game came out, the last few end game zones were JARRING with how many times they pasted the same thing down (like fortresses, NPC setup, etc)
This had such great potential, I don't know if its tech or time or ideological but looking at this map I can imagine a game where the narrative, skills, factions, world and economy comes together to make this a BRILLANT experience. Sadly we don't live in that timeline.

I thought this was an excellent MMO, only thing at the time it was missing an end game. We were running around every night opening chests. Its also hard to get back to a game like this after exiting so early. Especially when the people you played with are all gone.

So, how is this game these days? Seeing as I bought it long ago and there is no subscription model.. might play some again from time to time.

It's weird and crazy , the only thing that really stands out in my memory from playing this was chopping trees. And I apparently played 90 hours of it, according to steam.

It does have an expansion. It actually is fairly populated. I even see players leveling toons. I am doing the Mount objectives and then will work on the expansion stuff to get to 65.

That xpac stuff looks neat, and lifted from a completely different game from the one I remember from launch. I lost that account and would possibly play the xpac this weekend but having to level and do all the gathering shit again is completely uninteresting to me.

From memory, they smoothed out the leveling greatly at some point when I checked back on this like a year ago. One of the pains was leveling from 50-60 at launch. The quests ran dry and either you had to grind the bulletin boards or grind mobs. There was a dry spot at around the mid 30s as well from memory. They also rebalanced the gathering shit too. But Im sure it still takes a shit load of time to level that stuff up. But honestly just pick one or two and jsut do them while leveling. I would not even try any of the crafting BS since that was a HUGE fucking grind and there is prob like 50% of the server maxxed out on the shit anyway.

game at launch had a somewhat interesting sort of lost world/mystery vibe storyline going to it, survivors in a strange new world.

But I guess that had too much of a colonizer vibe too it so they radically retconned the storyline and made it pretty gay and retarded, lost all interest after that

Eh the retcon was needed because it let them expand beyond 14th century Europe/China and make it a "timelost island". Want Roman Empire and Vikings? you got it!

Yeah the gathering and crafting was why I went back to my first character. That gets real tedious very fast. They did make improvements into it so that it does not take as much as it first did.

Yeah this is totally wrong, you can totally add all those things, in fact you can expand on them and increase the mystery, by keeping the original lore in tact.

We were all age of sail conquistadors and explorers in search of the new world and we get sucked into a vortex/whatever the fuck and end up on this cursed magic zombie island thing. We're all starting at now and building up this beach head.

As you explore more, new expansions come out, the island gets bigger, we're able to explore deeper into the jungle, find more ruins, and we find even weirder ancient ruins from explorers before us. ruins of Vikings who got shipwrecked here. Ruins of romans, egyptians, shit is this atlantis? you can expand it as much as you want every expansion because the island is this big magic mystery and we don't know shit about it other than its fucking cursed.

But they changed all that. We're all immortals, we've always lived here, one big happy family. The settlements have always been here, always occupied, we all live in harmony with one another. There was never any survival element or mystery to anything, we wash ashore when our boat wrecks and welcome to disneyland, watch your step. the Egyptian will take your coat and the Viking will validate your parking.

by retconning that all these other different groups were always there on the island, everyone is immortal so there was never any gaps the islands have always been inhabited then there was never any ruins or mystery, the entire world is known and mapped. everything is just built upon what came before. We're no longer lost explorers arriving at a mysterious Island we're the 50th group to go through the ride today at disneyworld.

The story thus far was basically in really ancient times, The Ancients ruled the island and the Earth/Natural Elements as well. Eventually The Ancients brought some humans over to the island using some type of "beacon broadcast" to act as a work force and at some point, the Corruption was discovered and it infected humans, which went psycho and are implied to have killed off the Ancients and pissed off the elementals.

Later civilizations of humans, attracted by the beacon, made their way to the island at different points. And some got corrupted. The varying civilizations getting along for the most part is pretty easily explained: everyone has a common enemy in the corrupted and psycho living earth or lost. Plus if you're functionally immortal, a lot of mortal desires kind of change. No one can die normally and no one can have kids, so the population more or less stays pretty stable excluding people lost to corruption/becoming Lost zombies.

I never played the game when it came out, and I was just reading the thread and seeing how most of you were responding to the game, and at launch it sounded like a pass.

It looks like it could be quite a bit of fun now that it's been out for a while with some polish. I like the weapon swapping system, reminds me of the secret world.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you can master and use all of the weapons over time?

Yes. You can also master all crafting skills. The game has come a long way in Quality of Life stuff. The game went through a pain period where banks were not shared and teleportation was kind of a burden. Also add to that a slow running speed relative to the world. All that has changed. Ashes of Creation is literally following the same path this game did except without the ability to port but they have mounts. This game also has mounts now and actually they are well done.

It is still the best game on the market when it comes to the use of ambient sound.
