So this got a bunch of mentions in the game awards. its on Gamepass.

its a "soulslike" metroidvania. ala, hollow knight. for the Hollowknight fans, this seems like it ought to be a must.

I gave it like an hour and the "soullike" combat was not for me I think. its not the flavor of metroidvanias I like.

story seems neat.
far future. humanity spread out amount the stars..

cat aliens conquer humanity, and reset humanity back to stone ages, cultivating them as gods, and harvesting humans for food.
you play a cat alien that befriends a human boy, and fights back.

lots of talking.

What particular thing made it not the "flavor" you like?

Yeah, I started playing it and about 2-3 hours in I gave up on it as well. The story seemed interesting, but the combat is really obnoxious.

I'm getting...really tired...of all these newer Metroidvanias adding some "parry" mechanic. It sucks. The Metroid games are one of my favorite series, but they started adding this mechanic over the run-and-gun format.

One of the things about Metroidvanias is backtracking, some of which is just your own cluelessness. But to have your exploring being bogged down by unnecessary fighting is so annoying.

I put in about 6 hours exploration and killed 4 big bosses and unlocked all the major character skills/abilities I think.

If you're a parry god the game is pretty easy. It's like Sekiro meets Hollow Knight.

If you aren't then GL, though there is a story mode as well so it may be much easier.

The art style and animations are really beautiful and creative.
Story is interesting.
Music is there, but nothing has really stood out in any place I've been.
The combat is just OK and does nothing new or stand out.
Exploration is fairly rewarding as there is usually something to find and the map is very clear once you get the unlock for the area so not a ton of backtracking if you are thorough.
There are a bunch of items you give to your little NPC crew, but some don't appear to do anything for character progression that I'm aware of so far.

Still deciding whether to finish it. Gamepass says 20 hours for main story and 30 for completionist.

If you did like Hollow Knight then 100% give it a shot.
