am getting lots if samurai locks, far more than ninja which is what I need. any ideas? rng?
Don't think it's random, they mostly come from chests and amrita orbs that are in fixed locations. Some from bosses and missions too. I have 100 ninja and 94 samurai so it's pretty balanced overall.

Really wish you could un-spec one node at a time. It's annoying when you realize you learned two skills for the same button press and one of them will never be used, so then you have to start the whole tree over to get it right without wasting points.

how does that work? say if you use tonfa 90pct of the time does it benefit from +1 odachi skill?
Man I never thought about that. Just slogged my way through Demon of Pride at level 54 with the big axe. Think I'm done with that weapon for Nioh, it's way too slow. Shame because I love big ass weapons in most games.

Still in the first area. Got to the boss gauntlet thing at the end (feel the pacing is a bit off with that, with no bosses then suddenly 4-5?). The guy you fight like 3 times, who is now a yokai, is giving me trouble. Jumps around and slams down alot. All I can do is dodge. Can't hit him with my axe and my ninja gets killed really fast. Even with the rez scrolls, he wombos me then keeps up the attacks so I often die as I come back. Had him at like... one hit, one ninja star, then panic dodged instead of attacking and he killed me. Did an alt+f4 after that.

Now I am calming down playing the cat tactic game....

Note: I don't mind that I finally after 20 hours encountered a mob that requires me to git good. Problem seems to be that I'm not :(

Just block, eventually you will parry but if you low stance axe and block you can get him.

Can also run some co-op and get a few levels quickly, stats>skill in the early game.

ungodly advantage when you spend equal amounts of skill and magic stats with tonfa. you pre spam alot of magic buffs then aerial whack anything in your way. make distance then spam ninja toys and rebuff magic. rinse and repeat.

cant seem to enjoy this aspect as Samurai and strangely with any other ninja weapons. tonfa is boink

That goes against my core..... what if I need them... later?

I always do this. Always. Then I end up not using the consumables, or maybe using a few of the healing ones towards the end, never anywhere near all of them.

There was one exception to all of this: Lies of P. The final boss was so much tougher than the rest of the game (and you can't summon for it either) that I had to resort to a range-based "throw every major damaging consumable at it from a distance". That means all the throwing consumables I collected all game got loaded up and spammed on the boss from a distance while I ran him around. Did a PS5 system backup save beforehand, so I could reload the game every attempt and get all my consumables back. Yes, even with distance-spam it still took me multiple tries to actually get the boss down.

So, since Lies of P, I'm even more inclined to hold on to consumables and it's even MORE of a problem.

The other alternative for that guy would be to use the Always Perfect Deflect grinders and get him down quick before you run out of them. The problem is that I limped through Lies of P without ever truly gitting gud, just finding ways to win every fight rather than mastering the system of deflects. The parry window is way too small in that game and it wasn't fun for me the way Sekiro or Wo Long were. Well, if you didn't git gud, the final boss is specifically designed to destroy you until you do.

If you're struggling at all (especially in NG, but this is also extremely effective in NG+ so far), just get (or craft if NG) a full set of Tatenashi and a good crucible spear with a yellow imbue roll (e.g. lightning 20-ish). Reforge Life Recovery (Amrita Absorb) and Gain Amrita (Strong Attack) on everything, plus stuff like Pleiades/Decrease Damage Taken/Increase Damage Dealt/Faster Movement Speed/Spirit Gain (Amrita Absorb). Use double Nuppeppo or Nuppeppo + Gozuki cores for even more regen and defense.

Stats need to be 35 stamina for the armor weight (that's with the -10% weight skill enabled), and then everything else in constitution and heart. If your spear is really good, remodel it to those stats too.

All you do is spam mid stance strong attack 3x then ki pulse. The only arts I really ever use are the wind AOE on L1+triangle, and the running attack on hold-triangle. Whatever hits you take will be immediately healed up with the amrita/life regen synergy. When you're actually out of ki, use the cheaper guardian spirit attack to buy some time to regen it back, then carry on.

For talismans, I use extraction to massively increase the life regen on bosses, cutting blast for a big damage increase plus ability to hit things that don't want to stay in range, and barrier for the ki regen. Fourth slot is whatever, I mostly keep carnage in it but you can also slot a debuff like life leech or sloth if you need it.

Clan helps a lot too, I use life rec (amrita) from Toyotomi and +damage to winded enemies from Kakizaki. Damage to winded is really strong with spears, it takes very little time to put a boss into the red.
