Can someone give me the lowdown on how much better 7900 xtx is vs 9070 xt? Graphics cards have always had the most gay nomenclatures possible.
Easiest way to explain it is

9070xt
-7900xtx
=1170x

I swear you common core kids are helpless.

Short answer: 5-30% more fps at the cost of 30% more power usage

Longer answer: Buy the most expensive tier you feel comfortable dropping the money on. Realistically, for most players a 9070 (xt) or 5070 (ti) is going to more than suffice. The higher tier cards like the 7900xtx or 5080 use a lot more power and are probably overkill unless you must run everything max settings at 4k. Even if you don't care about electricity costs, there's still a noise price to pay for having to cool an extra 100-150 watts.

Money isn't the issue. 9070 will definitely suffice.

My main reason for moving off of 3080TI isn't even graphics is that this will play nicer with my Linux setup now that I've decided to not move to Windows 11.

They trade wins depending on the game. 7900XTX is the faster raster card, while the 9070xt has noticeably better ray tracing performance and access to FSR4. The 9070XT should age better for more demanding games that require (and make more use of) ray tracing like Black Myth Wukong and Indiana Jones - the more of these types of games that are released the better the 9070XT will be by comparison. Where RT makes no difference or isn't used, the 7900XT will pull ahead. The +8GB VRAM on the 7900XTX likely won't be an advantage for pure gaming during the usable lifespan of the card. If I was buying today I would want a 9070XT.

I run a 7900 XTX at 1440p and it's going to meet my, admittedly, high FPS standards for at least another 3 years. Also, with 24 gigs of VRAM I could give less than zero fucks about that industry fiasco.

*edit* fixed my retard use of meg instead of gig.

I've had a Powercolor 7900 XTX red devil since Feb of last year. My gaming rig has (2) 4k 144hz monitors and it does all that I need.

Probably the low end cards only I'd guess. Makes sense these aren't selling as well, not really worth upgrading if you're not on an old card and if you are you might want to look at investing into a card that'll last you longer or buying 2nd hand/AMD to save more money.

They also got initial sales money already so not too surprising they'd cut prices some to get rid of stocks.

My to-go store has plenty of cards, including 5090, on stock. They provide price charts, the Zotac infinity went from 3400$ in may to 2300$ right now, 10 pieces on stock.
They all lost 200$ during the last week

There's also Super variants of the 5070/5070Ti/5080 in the pipeline, probably releasing around the holiday season. If you haven't felt the need to buy a card yet, I'd probably hold off until those come out. Minor increase in number of shaders but 50% more vram if the leaks turn out to be correct (they usually are). 5070 Super with 18gb might be the peak of the price/performance curve for this gen.

Of course the price will drop , bought a pre built with a 5070ti in it which was a large part of the cost. It really doesn't matter I needed a card and I'll probably stick with it for a while. The games I play don't need that much already. Some game that I want to play and requires more will have to come out.

24 GB on my 3090 really deters me from bothering to upgrade yet. That and not having a 4K gaming monitor.

I haven't bothered with a 5 series either - yet - though deep price cuts might make me settle for a 5070 or 5070Ti non-super until we get next-gen.

The elephant in the room is I just don't think we're going to major improvements without a process shrink, and even if Nvidia did want to outbid Samsung, etc. for the best node available in another year or so, there's no reason why Nvidia wouldn't be using that capacity on corporate AI chips instead, unless we have a massive recession in the interim.

Yea I'm on a 3090 as well and sure looks like I'm entirely skipping this generation
I just hate that you can't 2 gens behind just find a decent priced 3090, my goofy 3080 I never feel performed right.

Hoping the good AMD's come down a bit with a new gen or will look long and hard at what they have next. (or god forbid give in with a 6 series)

That's what I did as soon as I heard that Valve had come out with a compatibility layer (proton). That was in 2018? I think? Haven't looked back since.
